Maggie’s Lewis and Clark's air rifle

Re: Lewis and Clark's air rifle

that is one of the coolest posts I have seen here. Absolutely fascinating. I only wish it had shown it working. thanks for shareing that.

Re: Lewis and Clark's air rifle

Its like a silenced AR from 1790. But not as stupid looking

Re: Lewis and Clark's air rifle

That is very interesting and cool. I have an modern day version = AirArms 510. It is one of my favorite rifles to shoot, and more accurate than I am. I did not know they even had air rifles like that back in the 1800's.

Re: Lewis and Clark's air rifle

Absolutely impressive. And yes, one of the best posts ever made on the 'Hide. Unquestionably.

THAT, is what this place is about, yes?

Re: Lewis and Clark's air rifle

Re: Lewis and Clark's air rifle

I remember seeing that on display somewhere when I was stationed at Ft Lewis. I don't remember when or where.

Shoots through a 1" pine board, 40 shots before a loss in muzzle velocity - why weren't these more widely used?

Re: Lewis and Clark's air rifle

wonder if they launched cleaning rods out of it, or shot rollie pollies out of it to the indians wondrament

Re: Lewis and Clark's air rifle

Best air rifle ever made. very few parts. New air rifles have more parts than this thing and i bet it will out shoot some of them

Re: Lewis and Clark's air rifle

The native Americans that saw the rifle reportedly thought it was magic according to the expedition journals. They used it as a neat show and tell item to break the ice, and presumably show their superiority in technology to try to keep from getting scalped along the way(maybe it was actually .36 cal I think though). The air rifle in a similar form(these in .44 cal) was used by the Austrians. I guess could these guys have been considered early "snipers"? one good link I found for this:

Enjoy. I still enjoy the high power and high vel adult air rifles. They are just good clean fun.
