I was at cabelas today and was able to pick up each rangefinder along with another leupold. I notice the glass in the bushnell and leupold range finders were not very clear. The Lieca was very sharp and seemed to work perfectly. Has anyone had any bad experience with a Lieca? Its a pretty pricey rangefinder but I want to make sure the one I purchase will be one that will last and work flawlessly out past 1000

pass on the bushnell with the quickness. its horrible. we were getting inconsistent or unable to read feedback as close as 400yds. the leupold was hit or miss on steel targets at 800yds this past weekend.

what is your budget? what are you intending on ranging?

one of the guys had a vectronix terrapin and that thing was giving the exact same reading every time at 845yds (the max at that range), of course its 2k.

i am planning on buying the leica 1600 in a couple of months.

I just went through this a couple months ago. I bought the Leupold first because I love their scopes unfortunatley they can not build a range finder for shit. The optics were very clear and crisp but would not range past 400 yards on a deer and 600 was all I got on steel. I returned it and bought the Lecia and man is that sucker sweet! Ranges deer out 1000yds with out a problem and the glass is amazing.

When you say that you want it to "work flawlessly out past 1000", what are you looking for? Given the wrong kind of target reflectivity and sun conditions, getting good readings beyond 1000 with the rangefinders you have listed may be a challenge. I have a Leica 1600, but everything has to just right for it to work in the 1200-1600 zone. A couple weeks back I was able to get it to read a target at 1600 yds, but that was on a tank at a military range under cloudy overcast conditions. Even then it took multiple pings to get it to return a range.

I'm not knocking the Leica; I think it's the best pocket rangefinder out there right now and I've been very happy with it, but a lot of guys think that they should be able to range a deer at the max listed range of the unit...

i don't know what others expect from a range finder, but i take the published range and cut it in 1/2 for small soft targets. usually if you look close the "max range" is something like a barn or a house or a rock cliff.

Re: lieca 1600 vs Bushnell 1600 vs Leupold

I am on my 3rd leica 1600 rangemaster crf-Y. They have had some quality issues with these units and some of the 1200... i spoke to Leica USA and they set one aside for me on my 3rd 'finder and made sure it ranged right. I don't think they're made to range reflective signs... tried to range a pedestrian x'ing sign about 100 yds away and it was faced at about a 45 degree angle from me. Bushnell reads it, but the leica won't. In fact, none of the leica's i had did. Not sure why.
My pinseeker elite 1500 only ranges to about 900-ish yds anyways. My Leica has ranged a little past 1600 so far. 1636 to be exact. I heard some good things about the bushnell fusion arc binos... other than the blue-ish tint when you look through them.
There's a pretty big thread of it in the observation devices section, or it might have been the equipment section... can't remeber exactly. Anyways, I posted there along with others who've had their gripes or pluses about these rangefinders.

Re: lieca 1600 vs Bushnell 1600 vs Leupold

I was wandering around yesterday ranging stuff with the Bushnell 1600. I am definitely impressed. I haven't gotten to point target testing, but I was hitting buildings to 1600+ fast. I tagged one at 1700+, but I couldn't get a second hit on it.

Same readings in both overcast daylight and night. I have not had it out in full sun yet.

This is definitely a candidate to replace my Leica LRF1200 and may have better performance than the Swaro Laserguide.
