Last year I purchased an Armalite ar-30 in .338 lapua magnum and put a nightforce 8-32 nxs on it. I love the gun, but it weighs too much to pack around deer hunting. I am looking for a 1,000 yrd gun that weighs 8 lbs or less. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Re: Light weight sniper

8 pounds scoped? Or just the rifle? Either way, it's going to jump around a little bit.

If I were going for minimum weight in a "tac/longrange" type gun, I would go with:

-Chambered in 6.5x47
-Pierce Titanium short action
-Manners MCS T carbon fiber
-20" heavy sporter, fluted, threaded for brake
-Nightforce 2.5-10x32mm

In a factory gun, I'd get a Tikka Varmint in .260.

Your options open up considerably if you are willing to pack something in the 10-15 pound range. Get a good biathlon type sling, and you'd be good to go.

If you paid full price on the Ar-30 you will more than likely going to take a hit on the used market. I would just keep it, drill and mill out portions of the stock to save some weight. Get a lightweight 3.5-10 optic with a qd mount and switch it for when you go hunting. Also Ditch the muzzle break, and get the surefire one for it(Or make your own). Save 1-2lb at least just switching out the break perhaps 1/2 lb from the stock, and 1lb from the optic. You would be looking at around 11lbs +/- 1lb. No 8lb rifle, but sure a lot lighter than the majority of rifles here. I think even my M4 with all DBAL, EO-tech, sure fire, etc weighs in close to 10lbs.

Re: Light weight sniper

Best lightweight sniper rifle I know of would be a Sako TRG 22 in 308 with a 20" barrel. Put a lightweight scope on it and you are good to go right out of the box, no mods needed.

Re: Light weight sniper

A decent carbon stock can be made to around 800 grams.
Roedale made a nice 260 with a fat LW Aluminium shrouded barrel and carbon stock that weighed 2.9kg without scope.
I have a heavy barrelled remmy that weighs 12.5lbs with 34mm 6-24 kaps tactical scope and carbon stock.

Re: Light weight sniper

A bit heavier than you are looking at, but I have a Rem 700 varmint in a McMillan HTG standard fill that is a delight. I was going to have it rechambered to 6/.223, but it shoots so well I am leaving it as is.

Re: Light weight sniper

Stock Tikka T3 Lite. Not only will it do what you want, it is cheap, accurate, has a buttery smooth bolt, and has a detachable magazine.
