I just stopped at Straight shot gunsmithings shop today to check on my new one. It should be done soon. It’s has a Remington 700LA titanium with a brux #2 fluted 9twist barrel chambered 7mmwsm. Barrel also has a titanium muzzle break. It will be bedded into a McMillan edge stock. Talley ultra- light rings and shilen trigger. I am mounting a 2.5x10x32NF with turrets. We weighted everything today and with scope it should finish right at 7lbs may be less since barrel wasn’t threaded or chambered yet. I can get you pictures when i get it.

I'm building one right now, Stiller Predator, #1 contour SS barrel with 5R, proboably fluted if someone will do it, Manner's MCS-SL, conetrol rings and bases, ADL bottom metal, 3-9x32 Leoupold Ultralight, should finish just under 7 lbs. when done. With bipod.

What kind of shooting? Hunting, Tactical, Match?

What sort of targets? Bear, deer, coyotes, Taliban, paper?

What distances are you trying to shoot?

What caliber depends on the intended target type and the distance you are shooting.

What is your budget? That's a really big one there!

A whole lot of work goes into making these that light, shaving every possible bit, Lilja 3 groove barrels, Talley rings, and time, man, time.

at 200 yards, just about any .308 is good enough for "minute-of-deer". Lonewolf Rifle stocks have excellent ultra-light weight stocks. If you can your hands on one.

Why not go with a .338 federal? Bigger bore means a lighter barrel, more than enough juice to kill anything in North America out to 300 yards. You could easily go with a 20-22" lightweight barrel, and do very well.

I have to say the 338 federal and the 7 wsm are pretty much on opposite ends of the trajectory spectrum. The 338 fed may be fine for some, but it certainly is not nearly as versatile as the 7wsm
To the op , both remington and browning make [or made ] ultra light rifles using ti. actions .

Maybe that came across harsh, I was trying to give the guy an excuse, and if he does truly have a disability I'll put "ass-hat" as the subtitle of my forum name. Normally I could care less about spelling and punctuation. When I had to phonetically sound out 3/4's of the words in the post to understand what was being said, I kinda got pissed off. You can't tell me that the web browser doesn't have a built in spell check that puts a nice jagged red line under all your misspelled words. Not correcting them is just plain lazy. either that or someone is working on their HaXoR-l33t starter kit:

I completely agree, but the original poster asked about a lightweight build, and stated his intended purpose was to kill deer at 200 yards and said .308 was his intended cartridge.

I figured at that range you could shoot just about any cartridge and do the job, I was just throwing in some food for thought to save weight.

That being said, I have a buddy who built a 7mm Mashburn on a Ruger action that he turned into swiss cheese, and with a feather weight stock and pencil barrel it weighed in right under 7 pounds with bases and rings. That rifle was lights out at 500 yards, and hit like Mike Tyson on both ends. If I was going to have one gun to take to the mountains, something like that would be it for versatility and portability.

Save that rifle and buy a Rem model 7 in 308, rebarrel if the accuracy is not to your liking. (200yrds, I'd go .243)

Just a nice package out the gate.

I'm sorry; my web browser doesn't put that nice little jagged red line under my misspelled words. If I want that I have to write everything in Microsoft Office Word and copy/paste it over here and click post. I don't know if whatever web browser you use is different than mine is, but my web browser doesn't have that built in spell check. However I agree obvious misspellings are annoying and should be corrected, but I don't see why anyone should get angry over them. JMHO

Fair enough man..just was wondering, or maybe hoping THAT is what you meant, and not what you originally said. I know we can all get a little "wired" around here, and a wee bit agitated...so, no harm.
And, yes, subject touches a little bit more so, because a friend of mine IS dyslexic, and let me tell you, it's not something to take lightly. Granted, NO disability is.

.260, 7mm-08, or .308, #2 contour finished at 22". ADL style Mcmillan with edge fill, DNZ mounts, simple fixed 6x of your choice and start filling the freezer. I know its not very exciting but it will be light, well balanced and do everything it needs to do well past 200yards.

I am putting together a 243 for my wife with a 26" ABS Carbon barrel, McMillan A3 Edge stock on a remington action that should come out to 8 lbs. The idea is to hunt deer out to 500 yds and some tactical matches.

For your build...if you are looking for a rebarrel in 308 and a lighter stock here is what I would suggest if you have the funds. An A3 Edge stock (2 lbs) and an 18" ABS Carbon barrel. These two things would give you a very light but handy/ergonomic rifle that would still be capable out to about 600 yards. You would be about 6.5 lbs.

Put myself a light rifle together for our last deer season.
Remmy sps sporter 243 stainless, barrel chopped to 20" and 15deg crown. Roedale mag system with AI mag, ultra light carbon stock bedded with carbon 25 oz, 2.5-10x50 Kaps illuminated scope.
Fully loaded with supressor she weighs 8.8lbs. Groups under 1/2" at 100 and around a inch at 300/3shot.
I dropped 15 deer with this rifle in the last season, closest was 5yds and longest shot 250yds.
Really enjoyed this rifle.

It shows some other options to cut out materials to lighten the rifle up

I also dropped a deer at 375 yds with a 16 1/2" barrel in a 243, though I wouldn't take the shot again its an option to cut weight

you can use this calculator to estimate barrel weights with different contours, calibers flutes and so on...
