I'm looking for a light setup for mye spotter. The 85mm will never get ligh, but I'd like it as light as possible, yet stable.

Ttoday I have this one, at app. 3,7lbs:

Looking into this one, medium size along with pistolgrip head, apparently 3 lbs all up:

My concern is wether it is stable enough for such a large spotter??

Would it work better with a 65mm spotter? i'd rather not trad down to a smaller one - gives med less power in field, and I use it for long range shooting at the range too.

Any views from those that have the same size spotter is much appreciated!

Re: Lightweight tripod for Zeiss 20-60x85mm spotter

I currently use a Velbon El Carmagne 540 Tripod that is carbon fiber for spotter/chronograph/hunting and it's plenty sturdy for a 85mm spotter. I don't think it's available here in the US any longer as it may have been discontinued. You may have more luck in Europe. I had my 85mm Cabelas Big Sky spotter on it and it worked great. I have since upgraded to a 65mm Zeiss spotter and it is rock solid. One thing you can do is take a bag or pouch that has rocks in it and hang it from the bottom hook. This is beneficial in high winds. You can empty the bag out so you don't need to carry the extra weight, rocks are pretty much every where.

The Outdoorsmans tripods are very sturdy also. A tad more pricey as you also need a head, so figure that in the total weight.

I have a Slik DX700 + Manfrotto 128RC fluid video head for my spotters. A little heavy but you will not want to have your +3000 USD spotter be blown to the ground the second you leave the spotter alone on the tripod :)

BTW you can use the same tripod fo course for phtography and video too.

Thanks for the advice, but that looks pretty much like the set-up I already have.

The pistolgrip from Outdoorsmans, is it sturdy enough to hold a big spotter?
I Had areally small Velbon tripod, butas soon as i touched, or the wind touched the spotter the view was interrupted..

I use the medium tripod from PRS and it is outstanding. I have a quick detach on my spotting scope as well as on the rifle cradle so I can change roles on the spot.
