I know this question has been asked before and I even searched for it but my terminology is all screwed up so I can't find what I am looking for. Therefor I am reduced to asking you guys. I have what appears to be powder burns about 1/4 inch back on my fired cases. Is this normal?

Rem action, .308, aftermarket barrel not sure what kind or how many rounds went through it. Shooting 3/4 moa @ 100 yards but I'm not >.5 moa shooter either. Rifle was built by Stacy at Mile High.

Re: Little help please guys.

or wrong powder, give us you powder charge OAL and projectile, did you open the powder in high humity, and what sea lvl you shooting at,

sounds like not enuff burn % on powder or not fast enuff(i.e. the powder burning longer than it should)

Re: Little help please guys.

If your getting black carbon residue down the neck this is normally caused from low pressure rounds. I noticed that your COAL is fairly short, how far are you from the lands/rifling. Thats a pretty short bullet listed at 1.186", with .346" bearing surface. If you have excessive free-bore "ie" too far of a jump mixed with a short bullet this could also contribute to your problem. Couple other thoughts is that you could have very generous chamber/neck dimensions or very hard brass. Either of these issues could prevent the case necks from sealing during ignition and allowing the blow-by. Your powder and charge weights are with in the norm, I'd get some new brass and try that first.

Good luck and Happy New Year

I'm posting from my iPhone/iPad righ now. When I get around my desktop I'll put a couple pictures up. If definatly carbon though. I ran a couple of cases through media cleaning and most of it came off.

Awesome information thank you. The brass is new win brass idk if that gives you any more info but just thought I'd let you know. I never measured my chamber length I read how to do it in the stickys but just never did it. So what I'm saying is I don know how far I am off the lands/rifling. FYI I also shot some Federal factory loads with 168 serriars and got the same thing. Also got it on some 180 grn Winchester loads I tried out. I don't know if any of that help you determin what's going on but I just figured all the info couldn't hurt.

Which makes me ask...is a little blow by necessarily a bad thing?

Re: Little help please guys.

A little isn't a bad thing, a lot is. Dirty necks are one thing, a coat of soot from the case mouth down to the shoulder is quite another. Carbon build up in the neck or free-bore area can cause some bad things if left unchecked. Some pictures would definitely be in order here, other wise we're just standing around pissing on our boots in the dark.

Re: Little help please guys.

Guys I tried my hardest but I cannot for the life of me get the pictures to come out right.

FYI the carbon is only back 1/8-1/4 inch it doesn't get to the shoulders.

Re: Little help please guys.

If it doesn't get back to the shoulder then I wouldn't worry about it. If you're not getting the accuracy that you want, you might trying working up a load with a longer COAL to see what it does.
