I just got my MWS in the mail a couple of days ago. I am due to hit the range Monday morning with it, so I have been checking the basic functionality of the gun to be sure everything is working fine. I noticed a problem almost immediately with both empty cases and live rounds.

1) When I charge the gun with a live round using the charging handle, the round goes into the chamber smooth as silk.

2) When I attempt to eject the round with the charging handle (both with and without a magazine) the initial strength needed to get the handle to break free is a lot. I'm a decent sized guy at 6'3" 215 lbs, and obviously I haven't had this issue with any other AR platform rifles.

3) On the actual bullet, there is a large scratch on it after ejecting it. I have not done my initial cleaning upon receiving the rifle, but I really don't see this being the issue.

Has anyone else had the same issue and what is the solution other than sending this back to LMT? I'm honestly kind of scared to shoot it right now.

I will try to get pics and a video up tomorrow. Need some sleep after 12 hours in the field today.

Re: LMT MWS Ejection Problem?

Is your brass sized properly?

The scratch on the bullet is from with the round is being pulled out of the chamber and hitting one of the barrel extension lugs.

Yes. My buddy and I used several different types of brass all properly sized. The actual rounds I used to test it were factory loaded 168gr SST rounds.

I should clarify as well, pulling the charging handle back with the round/empty brass in the chamber takes A LOT of force to make it break free. I will be out at the range tomorrow afternoon with it and will follow up with a range report.

Shoot the damn thing and then let us know if there is a problem. Scratches happen on every single AR platform when chambering. </div></div>

I should have clarified last night, like I said I was tired. It is a deep gouge in the actual bullet. I understand scratches happen

Pictures would help.

scratching bullets is common- gouging them- if you mean punching through the copper jacket- that would not be common.

The tight chamber, if you aren't happy with it, might warrant pulling the barrel/bolt and sending it to LMT for inspection. Perhaps Headspace is set slightly too tight?

That would result in bolt lugs dragging on the barrel extension lugs. That of course would be desirable to me, and if I could confirm that was the issue I'd be tempted to put polishing compound on the lugs and lap them in, but maybe I'd be making a mistake.

The liability factor is lowest for just sending the parts back to LMT to be inspected.

Notice the gouges. They are very deep and very rough. It has not punched all the way through but is pretty close. Like I said, range report tomorrow...if I don't post again you know why

For the record, the longer of the two is much deeper then it looks. Kind of hard to get a good pic off the cell phone. It starts from the very top of the tip of the bullet.

Re: LMT MWS Ejection Problem?

Took it out to the range today and put 10 rounds through it just to break the barrel in. No functionality problems that I can see and I was shooting 2 inch groups with crap FMJ ammo. My only concern is the amount of effort it takes to eject a round from the chamber using the charging handle. I'll give LMT a call and post updates.

I wouldn't worry with it to much. Mine does the same thing when it gets pretty dirty, and it leaves scratches on live rounds I eject using the charging handle. My rifle runs and shoots like a dream, so I doubt your's will be any different.

Most likely LMT will want you to send the complete upper back to address your concern.

Re: LMT MWS Ejection Problem?

Check and see if you have the "new" dual ejector bolt. The two ejectors put tremendous side pressure on the brass and make it extremely difficult to hand eject.

I had this same discussion with Gene at LMT and he said "its normal". Did your brass get its side dented all to hell when you fired it? The dual ejector bolt destroys the brass upon ejection.

Also check your ejection port front and back. Is it getting dinged up?

Re: LMT MWS Ejection Problem?

I have found that a piece of sticky Velcro (I use the loop side) on the ejector lump, will take a lot of wear and tear on your brass. If you don't reload, it probably doesn't make any difference. According to Gene, the technical guy at LMT, the bolt and carrier are the same used on the full-auto guns and the dual ejector bolt is made to really get the brass out of there...
