Several other threads are going on with the new LMT 308 as a topic. I just picked mine up and it certainly has a lot of WOW factor. This thread is not about the rifle, though, it's about the optic that will go on the rail. Lets keep it limited to the glass for the mission rather than an OBR vs MWS vs anything else discussion.

Any illusions I might have had that this will be a "battle rifle" for my needs went out the window the first time I shouldered the rifle. As discussed elsewhere, it is a heavy gun, as I expected. I won't be using an optic better suited for CQB. To the guys running Aimpoints, good for them.

So, as I contemplate the glass I want, I have to keep in mind:
1. This will not be an HD gun. It is a medium to long range 308 and will be used in that role (on the one way range; not a work gun).
2. It will be set up with a bi-pod (gun just got heavier); either an Atlas or Harris w/ Larue mount combo.
3. It is claimed that accuracy is excellent at 800 yards; I may well add a longer barrel as they become available and look to make this a 1000 - 1100 yard 308. I don't see getting a shorter barrel even if they are an option. Hence, there may be a case to scope it with a little more power than might seem necessary for 800 yard work, room to grow so to speak.

So here are my thoughts. The new Short Dot 1 X 8 that I really thought would be "it" is out, at least for now. I don't see the need for the 1X anymore(see the part about "not a battle rifle for me"). I have a 1.1 X 4 Short Dot on my 5.56 LMT that I could swap just to test. I may do it until I get the new glass anyway.

I'm really looking at the USO SN3s 1.8 X 10 or SN3 3.2 X 17. The 1.8 X 10 seems like a good size/weight/power combination for an 800 yard gun. From experience, I know that I prefer a little more power at 1000 to 1100 yards. I had a 3.2 X 17 SN3 that was perfect on my bolt gun in 308, but I no longer own either.

So after all that talk, my points for consideration are between:
1. Smaller, lighter, slightly less expensive mid power variable optic from a 1.X to 10X. Better for close in work and maybe a little limited past 800.
2. Slightly larger, heavier, and more costly mid power variable up to 17X. Narrower FOV at 75-100 but better out at 1000-1100 on smaller targets.

USO is not a must, but FFP and mil/mil is. Nightforce, S & B, and Premier are options and maybe IOR. Illumination not mandatory but nice. Nothing more than 3.X on the low end.

Im leaning toward the USO 1.8 X 10 right now.

If you are using more than a 4X please post your scope specs and logic behind your choice. A photo of your set up is good too; gives ideas for mounts and rings. I know, I will post pics too, but right now it looks just like every other MWS.

Re: LMT MWS; Optic Specific Thread

Just sold a USO SN4 1-6 that I had on my MWS.

Without jumping another 1K in price I think its as good as it gets for an all around all in one scope.

BUT

It adds a hell of a lot of weight to an already heavy rifle, no big deal work out more.

Its good but not perfect, I find the 6x a bit underpowered to shoot groups beyond 100yds and the illumination is not bright enough to use as a dot type sight on low power.

Next experiment is to mount my ST-10 and a T-1 on the new side mounted Larue. Figure that gives me a great long range optic as well as a dot sight and either or can be used stand alone. This dosnt come close to adressing the weight issue but it affords the option to remove the heavy optic and place it in a pack and not on the weapon. Again I realize this is not optimal but its worth trying till something better (or affordable) comes along.

With the recent trend of 16" highly accurate do all 308 AR's being all the rage I expect the optic trend to follow but at a slower pace. Not knocking the amount of engineering that goes into developing a rifle but personaly I beleive there are much more constraints involed in developing an optic.

Having said that IMO the perfect 308 carbine optic would be 1-10x with a mil based ret and a daylight visible center dot. Get the felling a 1-10x is some sort of impossible combination in the optic world but it would be great if possible.

Anchor....I think you should by a dixie cup, cut out the ends and glue in a couple mangifying glasses!!!!

Bro, I love ya like a brother but ya got a problem....

And yes you need to do some more curls...of the 16oz variety.

I think an ST-10 slimline and a dot (Dr. or T1)would be perfect until the 1-8 or 1-10 optics really hit their stride and prices come down.

Ok...I'm ammending my opinion...
Anchor you still have a problem ,but yeah I just looked up the USO 1.8-10 and it specs out(mil/mil, lit ret, ergo) at $2100. Not as bad as a I thought. Hey and its slimline!
Very nice!

Re: LMT MWS; Optic Specific Thread

toyz we both know 1.8 and the brighness of the illumination isnt there for what we are thinking.

Curious to see what come out of the Doc's mad lab the ret he developed for the 1.5-6 is interesting but he alluded to something special in the works for the 1.8-10x

Re: LMT MWS; Optic Specific Thread

What about a NXS 2.5-10x32? Not an "optimal" zoom range compared to other new offerings, but it is a well proven optic, seems like a good match for your use, and its size/weight fits the gun well.

Re: LMT MWS; Optic Specific Thread

Man I hope I didnt make a mistake. I ordered an MWS yesturday and indeed expect it to replace its predecessor as a main battle rifle. How much does it weigh? My DSA SA58 with rail has to be right around 10 lbs which I havent found bothersome(havent humped it for 50 miles either though)... I was thinking an Acog TA33 or TA11. If I find some extra cash, an Elcan 1.5 X 6 would be nice!

Re: LMT MWS; Optic Specific Thread

I am going with the USO SN-3 in 1.8-10X and JNG mil reticle. The small scope with a max of 10X is better for me than the 8X of the S & B, when it finally comes out. It has a 37 mm objective, left parallex adjust, EREK mil elevation and #1 mil windage knob.

I was not familiar with the JNG mil but I talked with John at USO about it yesterday. Half mil graduations out to 5 mils and 1 mil graduations the rest of the way. The large ring is the interesting part. John tells me it's meant as an aid for rapid engagement at lower magnifiaction. He called it spontaneously a "rapid engagement ring" which I told him should be the "RER". The ring and reticle both light up in red. It's not a red center dot like my Short Dot, but I am going to give it a try. Remember, I'm not looking at this for CQB.

Ignore the moa notations on the diagram; those are reference for the reticle maker according to John.

Re: LMT MWS; Optic Specific Thread

I was figuring a S&B MTC 8541 scope. Then again NightForce is putting out some nice stuff which does not weight too much. If not needed for CQB why not up the power a bit past 1 to 2 (on the low end)?

The Premier Reticles scopes would fit well as would a variable USO with a bit more on the high end (12 to 20).

If I recall Frank took a short POF out to 800 so a 16" may make a decent 1000 yard gun (one would have to play with bullet selection and weight to make it).
