I was shooting my MWS with 18" SS barrel yesterday. Loading 5-rounds in the magazine at a time, and shooting groups on steel to gather DOPE for a range card.

Anyhow, inserted a new magazine, and released the bolt. I pull the trigger, and... click.

First thought was the cartridge (Factory GMM 175-gr) was not stripped off the top of the magazine when the bolt went forward, so I grab the charging handle to cycle the BCG, and it's locked solid. I try with all my strength to pull back and cannot move the BCG.

I then notice the BCG is not fully forward, and hung up about an 1/4" from full lock-up. I've had this rifle for two months now, and just realize I don't have a forward assist. No problem, I'm able to move the BCG forward with my thumb and it locks up. I try the charging handle again, and cannot get the BCG to move.

So, with a live round in the chamber, I seperate the receiver, cock the hammer, engage safety, close the receiver, back into firing position, safety off, and fire.

Rifle goes bang like normal, and no other problems encountered for the next 14-rounds. At that time we had to shut down our range session because the nieghbors call and needed to cross the property to go camping up over the ridge.

Rifle was cleaned and lubed with Slip2000 EWL, then fired about 15 rounds prior to the malfunction. Prior to that, the rifle had around 40-50 rounds through a 16" barrel. Then the barrel was replaced with an 18" SS version, cleaned, lubed multiple times with 20-rounds down the new barrel for break-in and sight-in.

I just hope this was some sort of a once in a life-time malfunction. We'll see, I plan on punching paper with it at 100-meters in my backyard this afternoon.

Re: LMT MWS Problem...

Sounds like an under sized case to me...

What ammo were you using?

My m1a had to be sent back to to factory due to headspace issues. It would get cases stuck all the time (factory ammo) and I needed to use a rubber mallet to hit the charge handle.

I also have this issue on all my semis if I don't check the headspaace on my reloads on all my semis before loading. Had a batch of 1000 223 rounds that would give me chambering issues due to undersized cases in all my ARs. Got a bushing die and removed the neck bushing. Ran all the loaded cases through to the proper spec and everything was gtg.

Hope that helps. You should never need to use forward assist to chamber rounds unless you're rolling around in the swamps.

Re: LMT MWS Problem...

i've noticed that on my lmt mws (nov 2011 inspection date) that it's difficult to pull the charging handle back when a round is chambered. i noticed the first time recently when the range went cold. i went to remove the chambered round and noticed i had to put serious strength in pulling the chargeing handle back. i imagine its related to the duel ejector setup on my mws.

my lmt functions flawleesly nonetheless. always throws the brass 10 plus feet to my right. i love this thing!!

Ok, just went out to my buddies place and shot the MWS out to 1000-yards. Fired a mix of Lithuanian ball, Prvi 175-gr, and Federal GMM in both 165 and 175-gr. Total of 60-rounds fired today with zero issues.

One of two things happened. The brass wasnt sized properly or there was a piece of grit in your chamber.

If it ever happens again. Grab the charging handle firmly and slam the butt down on the bench while pulling back the charge handle. The brass will fly out the side.
