I was wondering if anyone develop a load specifically with a suppressor? I was trying some factory ammo that shoot reasonably well and when I attached the suppressor it opened up quite a bit. Is this normal?

Re: load development and suppressors

I found that my load changes with a can on the end. Think about what your doing to the harmonics of the barrel when you hang 16-22 ounces out there.

Do a ladder test

As previously stated, hanging a can changes harmonics drastically. Since your can/rifle combo is likely different from most other people's, the only good way is to develop your own load.

I agree with the responses. I guess there were posts here that confused me on how people got tighter groups after attaching a can. I guess they must have been lucky.

Re: load development and suppressors

I shoot with a can and it does not make my accuracy better or worse. It just changes the POI. It does not seem to matter what ammunition I use. The groups are the same with the can on or off. My POI is higher with the can on. I have a thunderbeast 30p-1.

Re: load development and suppressors

You never know how it will change your load until you shoot it. Some rifles show no change in POI or accuracy. The suppressor will increase your fps and change the harmonics of the barrel, which can (but not always) effect the accuracy of the load. Also, a load that shows no pressure with the can off, can show pressure with the can on. So, watch for this also.

Re: load development and suppressors

Also make sure that your can is properly shouldered and concentric to the bore. A loose can does not a tight group make.

Also, I don't know if this is often the case, but I had a 5.56mm can recently that widened my group up quite a bit. It was brand new and unfouled. As I fired it, my groups tightened up quite a bit over the course of 30ish rounds. It seemed that as the can built up some fouling, consistency became better. It now shoots well under a minute, and I would say better than it did without a can. Could have just been that loose nut behind the trigger too

Re: load development and suppressors

I, and I think most others, wouldn't recommend it. Most QDs, even with indexing systems, have a certain margin of error that just isn't worth the hassle and $. I stick with thread mounted to remove this margin. Besides, why shoot without a can?

As long as I throw some blue loctite on there my POI doesn't move except when I remove and replace the can for maintenance (don't run patches through a can). I could probably bring that to nil with indexing marks on the can/barrel.
