going to be doing a lot of load testing with 338 lapua should I OCW test at 100 like normal or 300 to let it breath a little

Bill, for any of my larger calibers I do all my testing at 500+.
Understand that environmental conditions may shut that option down, but on a nice day it makes for the best way to test those rounds.
When helping a buddy with his 375 Cheytac, I load tested at 1000 yards on mulitple occasions to confirm results.
I would go 500-800 on a 338 lapua, 500-600 for a LR 300 mag. and 300-600 for smaller calibers. All of this would depend on the wind factor.

I have done some useful testing at 400 with the lapmag. Like Russ said though further is probably better.

Seriously, I am testing my 338 at 100 right now for pressure and speed issues and form firing the brass. I will be done by weeks and then we go right to 330 and 550. End of the month... 1k.

I test my Lapua at 500 meters...just wait for the right day.
Good advice I got from Cory Trapp...he's pretty handy with a .338 LM..

I would go with whatever the rest of your rifles run with.
Just a personal opinion and I know this isn't on topic, but I thought I would make that comment as well.
I know your not a beginner, but them's my 2 cents.

300 yards is pretty much the Point Blank Zero. If you don't have a zero stop you can always just go lower than you zero. My question is WHY zero a 1500 yard stick @ 100yards?

I'm aware of the PBZ of the round Lt.
I ask the question because whether your using the weapon as a duty rifle or for fun and comps your going to revert back to whatever your used to. If you use a 100 zero on all your other weapons, why re-invent the wheel.
Capability of the rifle really has nothing to do with it.

I develop my load starting at 100 yards. I try to get the best group I can. For my 338LM, I then test it at 300 yards, 500 yards and then 1K. For me, if it stays sub MOA at 500 yards, then it's good for testing at 1K. I don't shoot for group, so sub MOA, or MOA is fine for me. Good luck.

One thing to keep in mind the bullets may not stabilize at short ranges. I spoke with Carroll from Sierra he said the 300 smk will not group well short range due to the bullet stabilization.

That's not an absolute either. My 338 RUM shot the 300's superbly from 100 to 1700. All rifles are not the same.

What is absolute. My Sako TRG 42 shot them well close range, but my friends custom Surgeon did not.
