With in a few days i will be picking up my new Savage model 110 in 338 Lapua. I need info on what types of bullets, powder, primers and brass you guys are using. All the guys I shoot with are using Sierra 300gr. But I am leaning towards 250 or 300gr Lapua scenars. Have been using Vihtavuori N165 for my 6.5 X 284 and it shoots great. But some guys are using Retumbo, H1000, H4831 and so on. Not sure about primers? But brass will be Lapua. I hear some guys are using hornady and like it. Would love the info. Thanks alot.

Re: Loading for my new 338 Lapua.

90-94 gr of retumbo or h1000 300 grain SMK, Fed 215m load to mag length and let her rip. You might start out at 88 grains but u will end up between 90-94.

Enjoy those big guns are fun to shoot!!!

Re: Loading for my new 338 Lapua.

I just shot my 700P in 338LM for the first time yesterday. Was using H4350, H1000, Retumbo and RL25, all with 300SMK.

78gr H4350
90r H1000
92gr Retumbo
90gr RL25

I wasn't shooting groups per se, was shooting at 600 yards, and each shot was spotted, then pasted.

I was REALLY focusing on the follow through and NOT flinching, but mine hits like a freight train, especially with 92gr Retumbo and the 300SMK.

It seemed that H4350 and Retumbo were being more consisent than H1000, and the RL25 was all over the board. I shot the RL25 last, and the Retumbo was putting a hurtin' on me, so maybe it was me. I don't think so, but it coulda been.

Re: Loading for my new 338 Lapua.

Re: Loading for my new 338 Lapua.

i have been using n165 with the 250 lapuas and 250mk with good results.
83-85 grains in lapua brass with 215m primers.
i tried 4831,group size was to large.
this is out of a trg-42.
skip the hornady brass and stick with the lapua.
if you cant get the federal 215m primers the the 215 works fine.i tried cci250s they didn't do so well.

Interesting.

I shoot a TRG-42 1:12" and H-4831sc is good for me with the 250s, out to 1022 yds.

85-89 grs, closer to 88+.

I've also had great results with VV-165 and VV-170.

Lapua and Norma brass, Redding .365" TiNi bushing sized, 215Ms. 3.675" COAL.

my TRG-42 has the 1:10 twist.with the h4831 the best 5 shot group at 600yd i had was about 4.5"
with n165 it was 1.68" with most under 3"
