How about a new thread for Ar-10/M-15/M-1 or other semi-auto loads?

I have a DPMS SASS and the other thread is mostly bolt gun data.

Let's post some semi-auto loads here, with usual info such as:
Weapon you developed it for (ie, M-14 or AR-10)
Bullet
Brass
Powder
Primer
OAL
Group size and distance
Velocity, if you have it, and if you do then the temp and altitude)

Thanks, much easier to find appropriate loads this way since there are so many responses in the 308 thread.

Re: Loads for Semi-Auto 308

Here are some I developed and have used with a 20 in Krieger 1-11 Armalite AR10. I do use a tubb spring and carrier weights as well with standard A2 stock.

Every load is LC 88 cases, and wolf lrm or Remington lrm primers. ( using wolf right now.) also each load is mag length except the 185 bergers. They are 2.95 oal. The chamber is an obermeyer that I throated to 1.5 degree leade, set up to run the 185 Berger BTLR .010 off the lands at 2.95 oal.

155 Sierra 2156 Palma. 46.0 H4895
175 Sierra 43.7 RE15 or surplus LR powder. 42.5 H4895
190 Sierra 42.5 LR powder
185 Berger 43.7 LR and 45.0 N150

AR10 16 in carbine with older med weight cromelined Armalite barrel,

130 SOST pulls 45.0 H322

That's about it for gasser loads. all are good in my rifles, the 190 and 130 load are a little stout. The 185 loaded long has been the best performer so far. Only slightly edging out the 190. ETA- these two are 1/2 MOA and the 155's are 3/4. No real good numbers on speed, the big gun is for NRA LR and is zeroed at 600. When I get some velocity numbers I'll come back and put them up.

Re: Loads for Semi-Auto 308

Thanks panzer.

Im working up a load for a DPMS SASS but it isnt finshed yet. Have gone up to 45 grains of varget under a 175 SMK but it seemed a little hot...i'll repost when i get something i am comfortable with.

Re: Loads for Semi-Auto 308

DPMS LR-308 24" Shilen barrel 1-10 twist
BHGM brass trimmed to 2.000
CCI BR-2 Primers
Varget 44.7gr
175gr SMK
2.810 OAL

I use the Lee factory crimp die

Sub moa out to 600yds. I have not shot it past that in while. This load has worked with all three barrels I've had on the gun.

.4-.6" groups are normal @ 100yds

Re: Loads for Semi-Auto 308

Hispeed how did the brass look on that one? I was getting some case head swipe...although I am using FGMM brass which I have heard is rather soft...

Re: Loads for Semi-Auto 308

Here's my experience with a 20" GAP built DPMS LR. All loads are WIN brass and CCI BR2 primers with a COAL of ~2.801" (I don't have a comparator). Extractor marks showed up on nearly ALL loads. Also, there were no signs of pressure on the primers in ANY the following loads. My only "true" indicator of pressure was loose primer pockets. Additionally, the primer pocket comments are based on a VERY small sample size potentially limiting the usefulness of that data. I haven't made any comments about accuracy in the "notes" section because all my testing has been done at 100yds thus far, but the 44.0gr H4895 load was a hammer (too bad I got home and found the primer pockets so loose). Additional testing is underway in the coming weeks.

Charge Powder Bullet Velocity Notes

41.5 H4895 178 Amax 2531
42.0 H4895 178 Amax 2562
42.5 H4895 178 Amax 2600 Loose pockets
43.0 H4895 178 Amax 2635 Loose pockets
43.5 H4895 178 Amax 2658 Loose pockets
44.0 H4895 178 Amax 2675 Loose pockets
44.5 H4895 178 Amax 2703 Loose pockets

43.0 Varget 178 Amax 2516
43.5 Varget 178 Amax 2546 Primer pockets acceptable
44.0 Varget 178 Amax 2585 Loose pockets
44.5 Varget 178 Amax 2600 Loose pockets
45.0 Varget 178 Amax 2654 Loose pockets

If I recall correctly, the ambient temp that day was about 70*F. Altitude is about 70' ASL.

Sorry if the chart is hard to read. It was copy/paste from MS Excel.

Re: Loads for Semi-Auto 308

To update, I'm getting about 2/3 MOA at 300yds with 42.2gr H4895 with the 178gr Amax. Gonna settle on that load for a while and continue to practice. Still need to chrono that load and confirm drops. Again, slight ejector swipe with no evidence of pressure on the primers. Haven't decapped any of these at 42.2gr to be able to provide feedback on primer pocket loosening.

Re: Loads for Semi-Auto 308

My 26" RRA Varmint loves 46grs of BLC-2 under a 168 SMK with a Win case. Solid sub MOA load in my rifle all day long.

Sorry...forgot I had this post out there. I've since decapped those fired cartridges and re-primed them to find that the pockets were still nice and tight.

Loose pockets are one thing. Extractor marks are a given for my AR 308 no matter what the load or bullet. The brass gets slammed hard on the case head.

Re: Loads for Semi-Auto 308

41.5 grains of ar-comp does stupid things in my shortened to 18" barrel armalite sass.i have actually shot groups as tight if not tighter than my bolt guns.i can't come close the velocities they claim, but accuracy is stupid.
win. case
41.5 ar-comp.
2.830 OAL
cci br primers
2460fps
i have a couple of 5 shot groups the.3's(crazy for a gasser)with a factory barrel, sevarel .4's and will boringly shoot .5's with out much effort.if this produce a tad more velocity it would be king.i have had good luck with 2000mr also.velocity is closer to 2600 but groups open up to a steading .75 with an occasional .5.i'm torn.

Re: Loads for Semi-Auto 308

I've been working loads for my DPMS SASS for the last few months off and on.

My "best" load so far:

178 AMAX
43gr Varget
Once fired FGMM Brass
CCI 200's
COAL 2.800

Last Chrono'd at 2455
Best Group .762@ 100 yrds (pulled a slight flier on the 5th shot)

I've shot that load in a few FT/R matches and it's been great. But always trying to get alittle more i started working up 43.3's and 43.5's...but i don't really see an appreciable velocity gain and my groups opened up a bit. I haven't worked them over and over, but i'm thinking i'll just stick with the 43 for now.

Re: Loads for Semi-Auto 308

I'll play, DIY'd DPMS pattern with 18 inch, BHW 1:11 poly barrel.

Federal 7.62 OTM brass
Wolf LRM primer
Varget 44.2 gr
Berger 185 VLD

It gives 2605 fps, I've had it to 1100 yards at Mammoth and my spotter called a sub MOA group. No more ejector marks than I get with any factory ammo. Those Bergers are are hard to beat.

I really think the velocity is due to the poly rifling but it's working so far.

And yes, they are mag length in C Products mags, it's close but fully functional.

What was the coal? I have some 185's but I am running the magpul's and I think the coal are shorter.

Re: Loads for Semi-Auto 308

LongArm,

I mic'd the C Product's at 2.89 with maybe a little more change, I'm loading at 2.8525 +/- and like I said, it just fits but has full function.

Also, the VLD's are the shortest of the 185 class so those are the only ones I could see fitting, by the numbers. Bryan Litz was very helpful when I PM'd him and sent me a link to all of the measurements for their bullet lines. I think you can find it at Bergers website now.

Tx_Flyboy,

You aren't kidding, I almost fell off the stool at the range when the first one came across the chrono. Truthfully, my goal was 2450ish so when the bottom charge started coming in, in the 2500's I thought the chrono was wrong. Brass looked good and they sure didn't kick anything like the Corbon 190 SMK load so I carefully eased ahead. Infact, I'm pretty sure that's not even max since the book max in the Lee manual for Varget is 45.0 with a 180 gr. bullet.

As to enviromentals, I've had this load from 350-1100 ASL and temps from about 40-100 F.

I sure wouldn't believe it if I haven't seen it though, so I don't fault anybody thats suspicious. But one thing is for sure, I will be looking at poly rifled barrels more closely, that is the only thing I can figure is the variable to give those speeds. Plus, I suspect they are very forgiving with the seating depth to the lands with the VLDs.

I think the speed is helped by your 1/11 poly barrel. I have heard that those will run a little faster sometimes.

Re: Loads for Semi-Auto 308

Has anybody got a 208 Amax load for the DPMS SASS worked up yet? I'm pondering how to make it work from the 18" barrel...

Re: Loads for Semi-Auto 308

178 AMAX (Moly)
Hornady Match brass
WLR primer
IMR 4895 ( 1st lot 42.2 grns. & 2nd lot 41.6 grns.)
COAL 2.810
2630 FPS 22 inch Armalite AR-10T

I have not chronied it since chopping the barrel to 18 inches but I am hoping it's around 2550. I also will be playing with the 178 BTHP and IMR 4064 soon. Does anyone know if the BTHP has more surface are than the 178 AMAX?

Re: Loads for Semi-Auto 308

178 BTHP (moly)
Hornady case
WLR
42.7 grns 4064
COAL 2.811
2566 FPS 18 inch AR-10T

This is what I settled on after working from 41.5-43.2. I wasn't really shooting for groups but looking at the speed and checking for pressure. I know there is a node at 42.8-43.1 so I am calling this good as it shot a one hole 5 round group smaller than a dime and I wasn't even trying to shoot for groups! The load in the post above went 2588 FPS and the Hornady 178 factory match ( standard pressure NON superformance) clocked 2569.

ETA these numbers are from the 18 inch AR-10T

Just picked up a GAP-10 18". Gonna start with 155g Lapua and 175g SMKs. Are there powders to avoid in a gasser?

I'm thinking H4895, RL15, and Varget.

not the powder limitations for yours like in a M1A, so really anything that works -- something that meters well would be good to try - you tend to shoot em up faster in a semi so it is nice to not have to weigh charges -- aa2520 and xbr 8208 are good choices for that

Where did you get the info about the node? Is there a chart somewhere? or?

Every barrels node will be different, most of the time. You have to find your barrels node, there is no chart or graph that shows a standard for nodes. It would be nice if it did work that way :)

LMT .308

I was pretty sure that was the case but I've read somewhere that quick load can tell you where the node will be. Although I do not have any first hand experience with this program. If it was tell you where the node is then there must me a formula to be able to figure the node out prior to reloading anything...

I got that info from Dan Newberry and I feel that acvcuracy nodes work across the board for many rifles. Thats why I believe factory match ammo works so well for many rifles.

I have a Gap barrelled ar 10.I just finished 4 ladder test with Varget and RL15.175 smks and 178 amaxes. The majic load for all 4 test came out to 43.2 grains in both powders but Varget was by far more consistant.I have some retest load @ 43.2 grains of varget. We will see if i got it right.Ill post back later.

Hand loads for my DPMS LT heavy 24 barrel

Hi gents. Thank for the DPMS load data!

I have a new DMPS LR 308 (thanks to OBAMA) for about 3 weeks and have experimented with several factory and hand loads.
First my DPMS has performed flawlessly with everything I offered it. As usual not all ammo performed equally! Out of six 20 round magazines one fed poorly. I am having a blast getting used to this setup.
My DPMS has a heavy 24 inch fluted barrel with a brake. It has a Leopold VX-3 8.5-25x50mm (30mm) Side Focus scope. The scope is 3 inch line of sight above the bore.

I tried recommended loads from this and other sites for 175 gr Sierra MatchKing, 165 gr Hornady AMAX and 150 gr Hornady SST. I also shot several boxes of Winchester Factory 147 gr FMJ and American Eagle 150 FMJBT commercial. I used the Winchester brass for my reloads. The American Eagle average vel was 2820 fps. The following is the average velocity measured, the best three round group (100 yard) and the load data for the three loads.

Winchester 147 FMJ factory: 2846 fps, 1.4 in group
Am Eagle 250 FMJ BT factory: 2820 fps, 1 in group
Handloads:
175 Sierra MK IMR, 4895 41.5 gr, OAL 2.8, 2583 fps, 1.4 in group
165 Hornady A-MAX IMR 4895 41.9 gr OAL 2.8, 2680 fps, 1.4 in group
150 Horndy SST IMR 4895 53.5 gr OAL 2.75, 2810 fps, .7 in group. This is the load that seems to generate the tightest groups. Pretty good velocity.

I used a RCBS AR Series Small Base 2-Die Set with Taper Crimp , cleaned the primer pocket and the flash hole. Trimmed brass to 2.015. Primer LR CCI 200. Alt 450 ft, temp 45-55 F. Winds variable up to 5 mph.

I also tried out my folding iron sights. To my surprise I managed a couple 1.4 inch groups.
I m a little superstitious about using IMR 4985 in a semi auto as this is what worked best in my 30-06 BAR. And an old gunsmith explained that the Army used IMR (then Dupont) for the original BAR. It makes sense that a gas operated rifle would be sensitive to the pressure that develops from chamber to muzzle. Still I see some folks are using Varget, R-15, R-17 and other powders. I am sure to try some of these.

Here is my rifle and my best group (5 mph variable winds).

I am looking for advice on a better bipod or even monopod with legs. You advice would be appreciated.

4895 is a great powder for semis and bolt guns. You just gotta keep good data on it across the seasons. Here is what it will do in my AR-10T...

AR-10TGroup_zps3196826d.jpg

You can't ask for much more in terms of accuracy...

i posted my load in the sticky 308 thread. 42.6gr of 4064/178 amax put 4 shots at .3 moa on my ladder test.

varget was good, but nowhere near 4064

In this day and age with nothing in stock and no back order, is anyone using TAC or AA 2520 or H 414 or H322 in their gas guns? I have other powders but not much, IMR 4064 is about gone and I prefer the ball as it meters well in the Dillon. Bullets are what I can find, some 175's and a bunch of 168's coming (?? from Midway) rifle is DPMS 308 LR.

This is what I've been making. I've been stock piling it for the completion of my psg1 build.

Federal match brass
41.7gr of IMR 4064
Federal gold metal match primers
175gr match king

This load is m118lr mk316 mod 0 or basically federal gold medal match with a military name. :p
My thought was I will make these rounds as a starter and work a load up from there. It is know as an accurate round but also safe so why not start from a known.

LC LR brass
45.8 grains of RE15
Federal gold metal match primers
155 Scenars seated to mag length

2830 out of a GAP10 w/ 18" Bartlein

.5"-.75" groups at 100

I wanted a load that shoots well in my DPMS/LR308, and in my TRG22. Here it is:

dpms/LR308
24 inch barrel, 1-10 twist
LC66 match brass trimmed to 2.005
CCIBR2 primer
175 SMK bullet
43.5 Varget
Velocity 2667 out of the lr308, and 2650 out of the TRG22(26 inch barrel)

I was surprised that the shorter barreled semi auto gave more velocity, but it just proves the point that we not take anything for granted as each rifle has it's own idiosyncrasies.

I didn't post the C.O.A.L. As I seat bullets using the olive rather than the overall length. Interestingly, the overall length is right around 2.810, the "standard" length for the round. Using the ogive makes it easier to set my die, gives better consistency, and makes it easier to get better accuracy.

Why did this thread die? I'm interested in data for a JP LRP-07 in .308 18'' barrel.

try43.4 of Varget or RL 15, Varget works good for my sass. Just starting load development using 4064 so I can use same powder for all my semi rifles, a M1a being the main rifle i shoot in semi.

Thanks panzer.

Im working up a load for a DPMS SASS but it isnt finshed yet. Have gone up to 45 grains of varget under a 175 SMK but it seemed a little hot...i'll repost when i get something i am comfortable with.

16.5" POF P-308
Lapua case
CCI 200 primer
168 AMAX @ 2.800" OAL
41.5 grains IMR 8208 XBR
2500 FPS / 0.5 MOA

Same velocity and accuracy with 42.5 grains in Winchester brass

Not a fast load but stable and doesn't beat the brass or rifle up.

EDIT: Next node up is at 43.0 grains in Lapua brass. 2600 FPS, but it's pretty hot.

In gas guns you should start and stay at around 3 percent of the top load or less.My ar-10 likes h335 in winchester cases with winchester primers and 41.0 grains of the h335.If you load em hot your are asking for trouble. I have just the std ar-10 a2 model and with the 168 grain hornady match I can get less than 1/2 inch at 100 yds while testing.I have no signs of wear anywhere on my gun.The hotter the load the more wear. Varget is not the only powder that will give fine accuracy out of one of these rifles.
