I have a Remington 700 in 30-06. I was thinking about a rebarrel in 6.5 X 06. But...there more I read here along with the Berger manual and some Litz stuff, and the more I think about it, maybe the .260 Remington is a better cartridge for me. I have a smith I trust with a real passion for the 6.5mm and will do either cartridge. My question is, could I do the .260 on a long action sorta like the Army's version of their old .308 rifle?
I would like to use this as a hunting rifle - antelope and deer to 400 yards and then punching paper and target shooting in general. I don't mind it coming in around 10-12 lbs.
On the plus side I got a nice set of sights and mounts from 20 years ago when I left the corps just sitting in a box, so I could do irons for fun. From a distance it would be an almost clone - because there is no way I could do the real scope etc for a true clone.
It is an ADL action in a junk stock, probably be using a McMillian for the build. What bottom metal should I go with or just stay blind?
Thank you.
