So, a friend of mine had an old savage laying around and long story short its now mine. It is a 110 (long action) 243 win. While i have no use for this as i have a couple 243's i was thinking about using it as a build for a 260 but my question is that are there any reason why a long action will not work with a "short action" cartridge? Other than the obvious of it being longer than needed will it not feed correctly? Or other issues as such. This may be a dumb question but any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Long action vs Short action

The 260 and the 243 are both derived from the same 308 parent case. If your rifle currently works with the 243, it will work with the 260. Just have it barreled and head spaced.

Re: Long action vs Short action

I'm going to build a .308 out of a stevens 200 long action just so that i can make the rounds longer and still be able to fit in the internal mag. i have to load my AAC one at a time because the rounds won't fit if i load them in the internal mag (or a DBM for that matter). so yea a long action .260 or .308 makes perfect sense to me.

You just need to make sure that you load the rounds and push them all the way to the rear so that they will feed properly. It might take a little training and dry firing to get used to the bolt. A lot of people switching from short action to long action tend to short stroke the bolt.

someone said they make an adaptor that helps hold short action rounds in a long action internal box. i think its a redesigned follower or something. it came up in a conversation i was having one day.
