Long actions, Non-magnum LA rounds, who's running them?

Figure their must be some folks running long action rounds like the obvious 6.5x55, 280/AI, and maybe custom '06 - all w/high BC bullets of course.

Imagine a few want to avoid the short action restrictions and just KISS and use a LA.

The 280/AI seems like it would have potential for running high BC bullets at good speeds.

I'm running a 6.5x55 in a long action. Let's me make the most of the cartridge and avoid the donut. 140s at 3000fps over 51g of 4831sc.

WOW, hanging w/any 270 or 280, what length bbl you running? Very accurate but every Swede I ever owned pleased!

Tell us more about your rifle if you don't mind. Great shooting! Thanks for post.

im running a 284 win in a long action. 180 smk's at 2850-2900 fps depending on density altitude. Using 51.5 gr rl17 and a 28" bartlein doesn't hurt. Love mine.

As soon as I can get my savage 308 sold, im starting a remington 700 30-06 build. Planning a deep fluted m24 profile in a manners t2. Might go varmint contour and a manners eh1 but not sure.

I have a Winchester LA chambered in 280AI by Moon. It flings the 162 A-Max and 168 Bergers extremely well right under 3000fps. I haven't felt the need to try the 180s, yet.

Running one but not in the exotic calibers but a good old fashion '06....

Ive been shooting a 284 on a melonited BAT this year, one of the most consistently accurate guns i've ever had. You can definitely see a difference over the smaller calibers when you get out around 1000 yd with some wind!

Same here, but mine is 270 Win. It's an old school hunting rifle on a R721 action that gets the job done, especially with 60gr of H4831 behind a 130gr SP.

For target purposes, my short action 6.5CM gets the job done as well as any standard bolt face LA.

Good stuff guys, thanks for the replies, some strong performance, the 280/AI seems pretty efficient, guessing it'll hang w/the '06 but less recoil?
Any of you running brakes or suppressors or without?

Currently building a 6.5 x 06. Medium Palma barrel from Stilen @ 26", running a Timney trigger, & a Burris. I live at 5000 ft with significant winds, Antelope is one of my favorites and it is a tough tag to draw in Az. This is mostly for some distance hunting but something tells me I will be ringing some steel. There are several reasons why I went with this 6.5 x 06. As I get older I do not like recoil, I think this will be a decent compromise and runs fairly close to a 7 mag, a few hundred fps slower and less muzzle blast. Certainly less recoil than the .30 cals. 30-06 brass is plentiful. Don't get me wrong, I still love the old cartrige, but 50 rounds of the heavier bullets really seem to beat me up - no fun.

I'm running an old 27" 40-X Palma Match barrel on a LA 700. Simply how it worked out...Only action I had available was my .280 AI Hunting rifle. Got bit by the LR hobby and this was my cheapest build to get my feet wet.

It's worked so well for me that I intend to keep it as a spare and an occasional shooter once my 6.5x47 Lapua is done.

As a side note on the .280 AI cartridge....I ran a 26" #4 taper douglas barrel on that action in .280 AI as a hunting rig for about a dozen years. Cleanly killed several deer and elk with 160 NP's out to 400 yds. Great cartridge. Never felt I needed more.

George, w/you on the recoil, rather shoot a 6BR or 243 any day of the week, or a 260 for that matter, over an '06 - never liked it, b/c of recoil. I would love the see the industry get behind the 6.5-06, or at least speed up twist on 270s and bring out more bullets.

If my barrel ever shows up to the dealer, I will be running 6.5x55 through a Blaser Lrs-2. Although, those don't really have a long or short action.

I am pretty sure my next rifle will be a 6.5-06. The 6.5 bullet intrigues me...

3 1903 Springfields in 30-06, 1903A3 Springfield in 30-06, and a Savage 110 in 6.5x55 with an E A Brown barrel in a Choate Ultimate Sniper stock. Still working on sights, scope mounts, and cheek rests so I can get behind them prone without muscle spasms in the back and neck. It's hell getting old but it beats the alternative.

Anyone have a long action in a non factory wood stock? Reason asking is I have a Model 70 sitting at Moon's now that's waiting on a barrel. Gonna be a 30-06 just not sure of the profile of the stock yet. Looking at Metal and Wood blanks now.

edt: Sharpsman, nice rifle! What length barrel is that?

That long '06 - about a 30" er? 10 twist? What bullets are you using and speeds Sharpsman? David Hammett still around and is he mfg bullets any?

Or h4350! I'm pretty excited for it. Anything based on the 284 case, can't go wrong

Yep...10 twist and David is still around! Don't think he's making bullets now! Staying too busy drilling water wells! Shooting 185 Berger VLD some and some Hornady 195 VLD. Just got some 208 AMAX and haven't tried those yet. I got screwed by Kiff at PT&G because I sent them two dummy rounds at the fixed length I wanted the chamber for freebore and it's way too short. Having to seat the bullets too deep. Will probably take the barrel off and put in adequate freebore when I get the time!

My main deer rifle is a 6.5-284 on a LA. Shooting the 127 LRX at 3100 is deadly.

Once this barrel is toast, I will likely re-barrel it to straight .284 win.

One of my favorite rigs is a LA 700 chambered in 6mm-284. 107's at over 3400fps puts a smile on my face, accuracy came in at 3450ish so I stopped there.

Also shoot an old Savage 110 in 6mm Ackley, screwed up and put a 1-12 on it :(

Very nice rifles, Layton - Sweet Swede thanks for info, and to all posters, nice sticks!

Looks like the 'Ol Springfield still getting play, in a serious way, long bbls and Sleek heavy bullets, modern powders, make the old Vietnam and other war snipers proud.
