Hi, I have a question on the shipping of long guns inter-state. I have a son who lives in Wisconsin as I reside in Ohio. I want to ship him a long gun for xmas? I want to use the USPS system. What would be the proper procedure in doing this? Or any other economical way? Thoughts, ideas?
Thank You,

Re: Long Gun shipping questions

find an FFL that will receive the gun, put it in a box, take it to UPS (I know, you said USPS, but they really do suck for shipping firearms) send it UPS ground, insured for the replacement cost, to said FFL holder... w/ a note saying who it's for, and their phone #, and a copy of your driver's license...

when it arrives, the FFL will log it in (why he needs you DL info), call you son (why he needs his name and #), then you son comes in, pays around $25, fills out a 4473, which gets called in to NICS, and if he gets approved, he's out the door w/ his gun

Re: Long Gun shipping questions

These are the general requirements I go by when shipping a firearm.

A non-licensee wishing to ship a firearm to a licensee needs to do the following:

1. Determine that the licensee will accept a firearm shipped by a non-licensee. Federal law does not require that licensees accept shipments from non-licensees, and many licensees choose not to accept shipments from non-licensees.

2. Determine that the licensee has a valid FFL.

3. Package the gun in a non-descript box.

4. Ship the firearm insured with some form of delivery confirmation.

5. Ship the gun in compliance with the applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations and the USPS or contract carrier's tariff governing such shipments.

Confirming the Status of a Licensee
Some Licensees will not provide a copy of their FFL to non-licensees.
To confirm that a person is a licensee request the:

1. Name under which the license was issued (i.e., can be an individual's name or business name),

2. First three and last five digits of their FFL number (#-##-XXX-XX-XX-#####), and

3. Official premise business and mailing addresses.

This information allows the non-licensee to verify the validity of the FFL using EZCheck.

To do this, go to the EZCheck website; enter in the first three and last five numbers provided by the licensee. The system will respond with a new screen, showing the license number. expiration date, licensee name, trade name, premise address, mailing address:, Letter of Authorization (LOA) issue date, and LOA expiration date.

Print a copy of the EZCheck results and attach it to the bill of sale that is your record that you verified the licensee’s status.

I usually use fedex and it averages around $17-20 for shipping a rifle.

Re: Long Gun shipping questions

If you use ups, you'll need to go to a terminal (maybe that's not the proper term). The little ups stores (typically located in strip malls) won't ship firearms or hazardous (ammo, powder, ...).

I've never had any issues shipping firearms via usps. Maybe that's just luck. Just have it boxed up / ready to go. During the '08 buying craziness, I sold an AK and didn't have shipping materials. Purchased materials at usps, went to the parking lot and boxed it up on my tailgate. No cops, but there were a couple cars that pulled in, saw me and kept going.

Edit: Have you ever committed a felony? If you’ve ever pulled into the USPS parking lot with a pistol in your truck you have… If you use USPS, leave your sidearm at home. That's probably the best reason to not use USPS...

Re: Long Gun shipping questions

When I sent my rifle to GAP I had to use USPS. FedEx would only schedule a pickup if I had an FFL or the FFL made the shipping label. UPS would not accept it at the terminal. Even though I had a copy of their regs in hand they told me they could not accept guns. Nice old lady at the rural post office beside work took it no problem. Asked me to bring a copy of the FFL or said I'd have to sign an affidavit or some such. But it was no problem. A little expensive but at least I got it shipped out.
