Hey guys I been tinkering around with some different loads to a) establish what my rifle likes best @100y (I have that pet load and works well) . B) find my best 200 yard load (also all set ) and then develop a sufficient long range loading . Hoping i would have been in the 1.5 / 2.0 moa area at 700 I played with 175s and started to make some headway at that distance . No sooner did I get my numbers worked out did I gain access to a piece of private property where I was able to mark off 1000y and put a piece of plate out. We'll after a night on bench basing my loads on what my target velocity was and some research I figured on using my 155 sierra palma match bullet with varget and br2 primer . I also had 175smks from my pet data list . the 175s I believe we're transitioning to transonic as they were very inconsistent on target end . . The 155s had enough ass to get their but my 700 aac sd 308 didn't shoot them particularly well. After doing some reading I saw the .308 guys using 20" 1/10t at 1000y were all using loads that were around 2800fps at muzzle or faster some more serious higher end owners where in the 3k- 3100fps range. I was having issues getting velocities even on 2650 side . I played with the palma match 155 w/46.1g varget in lapua brass and was kind or disappointed . Wondering what's the fastest you guys are pushing your 308 bullets in 20" barrel . with 46.1g of varget and lapua brass / 155palma i was getting such tough extraction i was having to palm stamp the bolt open to eject the case. primer had signs of "higher" pressure . anyway my target goal was originally 2800 fps but am curious what you guys are using for a long range load and what the velocities are

I have shot mostly 600 yard class F/TR but recently began to basically play with the steel at 1k. At 600 yards the 168 SMK were hands down more accurate than the 175smk but the 168 are not going to make the 1k trip. At 1k I use 175 SMK, Lapua brass cci 200 primers and 44.5 to 45.0 Varget. I chrono'd the 45.0 out of federal brass (what I used to use) and got average of 2628. I recently shot 44.5 Varget and had no problem ringing the steel. Hit a 8" plate a few times and easily hit the torso sized steel nearly every shot. I have a rem 700 sps tactical with 1/12 twist and 20" barrel. FWIW a buddy of mine tried the 155 lapua scenar and they shot bad from his 18" barrel and 1/10 twist even at 600 yards.

The 175 SMK does not go nuts when transitioning to subsonic. The 168s DO.

If you have different loads for 100 and 200 yards and longer range, you are doing something wrong. A good load should shoot well at 100 and 1000. Mine do.

2600 fps out of my rifle. Have used it out to 1200 yards. With the short barrel you may need to go up to the next node at about 44.8 grains.

I have the same rifle, i can hit steel out to 1100 yards and my velocity is 2570 fps, the "lack" of velocity is not your problem, the wind and drift play a bigger part than you give them credit for, even with no wind there is still .3 mils of drift @ 1000 yards ...aprox 11 inches

Agree with the above posters. I shoot 175 SMKs at about 2560, loaded to 2.83 with 42.8 of 4064 and LC brass. Very accurate and consistent from 100-1100m. I've shot them out to 1600m using the AB Kestrel.

^^^this is my go to load and is around 2535 fps out of my 20" aac-sd

175 smk seated 2.825", varget 44.5g, Winchester brass and primer yields about 2550, droping it back to the next lower node at 1 grain less and I am around 2490... if using lapua take .2 grains off the above in my experience. Both show good accuracy at 1000 if you can dope the wind well. the highest velocity I could reach with 155's was around 2730ish with scenars but accuracy (group size) sucked so I stopped using them in that 308 and now use either 168 a-max or 175's. The same held true in my 20" R700 tactical 1:12.
