Rifle Scopes long range scopes.

Re: long range scopes.

Need to do a little homework first on what exactly you need on mounts and how the scope will be used.

All the following is covered better in separate threads but for a start on the discussion.

- Maximum distance you need the scope to adjust too. To allow a 100 yard zero, one can take half of the vertical adjustment range and then find scope rings with offset less than this. One then double check the ballistics (i.e. JBM) of the load and bullet to see if you have enough adjustment range. In theory having the scope zeroed a little closer to the center is better.

- Will you be ranging and/or holding off with the mil dots / lines in the scope at various maginficaitons? If so then a FFP scope helps, otherwise, the finer apparent cross hairs at higher mag (or larger apparent at lower) of a SFP scope are liked by some of us.

- If you will be shooting fast / off hand in very poor light (with out illumination of the cross hair) then the classic mil dot is at times of help. However, as I expect from this setup, you will be off the bipod at a distance, the finer "line" type "mil dots" are of interest.

- Do you "need" illuminated cross hairs?

- Would get the turrets marked the same as the "mil dot" spacing, be that mils (my preference) or MOA.

- Would consider some type of zero stop and/or a single/double turret if they give sufficient precession for your applications.

Also look at the Hensoldt scopes ....

Re: long range scopes.

Nothing wrong with the S&B 5-25x56 at all. I have a couple and love the scopes. I use them to shoot tactical/sniper matches. It would work very well for you on the 300WM. The scope has great glass and over 100 MOA of elevation so you can mount it on a 30-40 MOA base and have alot of elevation for distance shooting. I would recommend the P4F reticle.
