Gunsmithing Long throat.. does it matter if still grouping?

I've got a barrel has lots of rounds through it that is 3.330" to the lands based on ogive. My box magazine only allows me to seat to 3.240". This seems like a big jump to the lands. I'm still able to shoot sub .5MOA 3 shot groups. The proof is in the groups, but should I start looking for a new barrel pretty soon since I have that much jump?

What was the length of the throat when it was new?
What caliber and how many rounds is "lots"?
Are your sub 1/2 MOA groups at 100, 200 , 300, etc.?

It is a factory Savage 10FP .308 24" barrel. I got it used with about "1800" rounds on it and I put an additional 1600 rounds so far so it's had a good life. .5MOA is at 100yds.. and not all the time. At 200 and 300 the groups do open up but are still not far off MOA if I do my part.

I don't think you have to have a new barrel. Maybe you want a new barrel.
If that is the case then go for it. There are lots of good prefits out there for the Savage. IMHO, there is no sin in getting what you want even if you don't need it.

Not exactly the same, but just for comparison. My brand new R700 in .204 Ruger will push a bullet out of the case before it touches the lands. Can't seat to the lands in that gun regardless of mag length.

I thought about that.. adding some Bondo to cheese cloth and wrapping it around some .243 bullets and sending them down range.

<span style="text-decoration: underline">That is called a reamer</span>. Set the barrel back and you'll be good to go if you haven't loaded super hot and firecracked the leade/throat.

3.240" on a box magazine is a lot of room, especially for a .308

I had a remington 700 VS that jumped over a hundred thousands and shot great. If it shoots Dont' fix it!

The proof is on the target but barrels can go south on you at the most inoppurtune times. As funds became available I would start gathering up the parts for a quick barrel change.

Dave,

What are your thoughts on setting back vs. re-barreling entirely? Assuming you're starting with a barrel already on the rifle that was an outstanding shooter for you?

I planned to keep shooting it and I'll do some longer range shooting more often to see how it goes and spreads. But also like the idea of getting the process rolling on a new barrel if this one has impending potential of going down in the next 1000 rounds or so.. I hate waiting on parts.

I thought about getting it set-back as well but wasn't sure on the cost of that and if it would be worth it on a factory barrel with around 3000 rounds. If it's going to run me $150 to get it setback.. I might as well pony up the extra $250 for a new barrel.. sound about right?

I watched this happen to my shooting partners 7STW. Was shooting pretty little groups to extreme distances and then, BAM, in the middle of a range day, just stopped shooting. Like 2-3 moa.

Borescoped and 6-7 inches of rifling were gone. Doubt that happened between 9am and 11 am that morning.

I'm thinking $250-$350 for a good blank. Then another $150-$250 (location and quality name of gunsmith) to get it crowned, threaded and a chamber cut. And of course installed.
