putting together a Savage long range hunting rifle and ordered a Shilen Select Match 28" varmint contour replacement barrel. I ordered it in 1-8" twist for the 180gr VLD and in preparation for the New 195gr vld I keep hearing about. Since the barrel will be chambered by Shilen, and I'm planning on shooting such a long bullet, should I request they put a longer throat on it? and if so, what would I be asking for? any help would be appreciated

I would take delivery of it how it is and wait for the berger to come out and then check to see how the bullet sits. If it needs to be throated then take it to a smith who has a throating reamer and throat it to the exact spec you want/need.

It may cost a little more but it sure beats haveing a barrel with a throat that dosen't work for your application.

Probably need a shorter throat, not longer, with the 195 Hybrid. Only way to know for sure is to have a bullet in hand and take measurements.

+1 on RWS plan.

Wouldn't a heavier hybrid need a longer throat than a lighter VLD?

Trying to picture in my mind.

yes </div></div>

Not necessarily. In my 7WSM the Berger 175 and 180s, the Sierra 175 SMKs as well as the Hornady 162 Matches are all more than .100" longer COAL than Sierra 180 SMKs when loaded .015" off the lands. The heavy 180 SMKs fit fine in my SA magazines while being .015" off the lands (2.965" COAL).

That said, Berger seems to have bullets with long ogives. I suspect without a 195 bullet in hand it'd be a crapshoot on getting the proper throat. RWS is right, shoot what you can now and wait for the 195 to materialize.
