Gunsmithing Longer action screws for Rem 700

Re: Longer action screws for Rem 700

I knew they had them, but I was trying to find out if some place local would have some that would work, so I wouldn't have to order them and wait. I bedded my 5r and the front screw is only grabbing about 3 thread and I didn't want to torque it down and risk stripping it out. I am hoping to go to the shoot this weekend in pioneer and need to get my rig back up asap.

Fastenal or perhaps an Auto machine shop will have socket head cap screws. 1/4-28 I believe is the thread. Measure the length you need and cut/grind to proper length. Just be sure when you torque them down the after torque length doesn't allow the ends to protrude through the action to bind the cocking piece or to rub on the lower bolt lug. Ruins accuracy. JMHO

Re: Longer action screws for Rem 700

Hard to find the 1/4-28s in my area. The screw that comes up short for me is the front. I take a tang screw and cut it to fit. I use a die to clean up the cut, but it is usually not needed. And as mentioned, Brownells has longer screws in stock.

Not to start anything, I heard it was 3.

Actually, Its the amount of threads that equals the major diameter. So if the major diameter is around .250 , each thread is .035. So .035 goes into .250 about 7 times. 7 threads are your strenght on a bolt.....yea Im bored tonight....
