Guessing he's a bull terrier mix. Any ideas?

Sitting in front of my 3 year old GSD. She's 3 years old and 100 lbs. The little guy looks to be about 4-5 months old, and 25 lbs. Good appetite, good demeaner and seems to have been cared for despite the lack of a collar or tag. He was running with an older Pit bull, also tagless, but he would not let us approach close enough to get him. Didn't want to just let him run around the streets as rush hour approached but the older fella got away...

Any bulldog experts out there?

We'll keep our eyes open for postings by the rightful owners. Someone loves this dog.

ETA- Mrs. Q put the blue collar on him so I could walk him this morning.

We've started calling him Spike as there is an arrow head of white on his face running the width of his snout up to a point just above the axis of his eyes!

He's a cool looking little dude!

This is good news to hear and a good looking dog. Here in Chattanooga, I was told, Pit Bull strays are put to sleep within 24 hours of pickup.

looks like a staffy (staffordshire bull terrier)one of the better bull dogs, i had one, he was one of the best dogs i have ever owned, loved kids and everybody, looks like you have a really good dog, i may be wrong though

Incidentally, we found our current Pit on the street. Fantastic dog. Honestly, one couldn't ask for more in a pet. We first took her to the appropriate Humane Society shelter for where we found her thinking the owners would pick her up. I now regret that. The dog spent four months there and the process both dropping her off and picking up again was full of BS. I should have known she was dumped because we found her in a commercial district away from any homes. Seeing her sit there next to your GSD it looks like he is eager to be a well behaved member of your family. Congratulations, now get him to the vet and get him vaccinated. I wouldn't worry about any A-hole owners who let a Pit run wild in the street with no tags just waiting for it to bite a kid or get hit by a car. F-em.

Common colours on bully breeds. The legs look too long. But probably some looking at the head and ears. We went ahead and got our genetically tested; it is only $100-$200 these days (of course, these days I should be careful saying "only" in connection with anything over a dollar!).

I am preparing for the possibility of permanent adoption of the little guy. I pulled Elke's (formerly Dax's!) crate out of one of the sheds and it's in the house. He spent the night in there last night. My wife and daughter are already teaching him to sit and he's a quick study. "Stay" can't be far away either.

For insurance purposes I would describe him as a mongrel if asked; I really don't know or care about his pedigree and it isn't important to me; it is not destiny. Mrs. Q's youngest sister has a pit mix she adopted from the Humane Society. Their brother adopted one as well.

What you say is true here as well Cartman, The Humane Society, has a very narrow window of tolerance for these bulldog types. They are often painfully compassionate; annoyingly so. Sadly, fear has overtaken rational approaches to this breed and as money is tight, otherwise decent people have no qualms about putting down any unclaimed pit bull or mix, with prejudice.

It spans political leanings as everyone knows pit bull horror stories.

That said, every story I know of bad dogs stems from neglect or abuse. Should we keep him, he'll live in the house with his family and be fed, vaccinated, walked, played with, trained and be a buddy to Elke; She's missed her old mentor, Dax, these last two years.

We had to put Dax down almost two years ago to the day...Hmmm...

Neither of us goes to church or synagogue, nor are we hippie mystics, but we found our pup as our GSD was dying of cancer. The way she fit in with the Fila, who has also died, and now with the birds, my wife says she was sent by God. The way it all played out it is tough to argue with.

I could care less about pedigrees myself. Just looking at him, I would say he has boxer in him for sure (feet, legs, and ears), and some kind of Bull Terrier; whether it's Pit, American, Staffordshire, or what else I don't have a good guess. If you get a test, you know for sure what's in him. If you never get the test (it's about $75 in my area), you can claim complete ignorance of what breeds are in your mongrel. He looks like a happy puppy, and since you haven't said anything about any signs of aggression toward other members of the family, he seems to at least be decently socialized.

I'm not telling you anything you don't already know, I'm sure.

Well, he wants to chase the cats (we have three), but then, he is a dog!

No aggression at all so far. The adult male he was running with yesterday afternoon seemed to be friendly too but wary and would not get close enough for Madam Q to work her magic. She has a gift with neanderthal types, dogs and can charm stray cats that wouldn't come near a tuna factory!

How funny. This guy showed up when he was a little younger than yours. Beat to hell with scars from other dogs all over him, near starved, and a fang broken off at the gum. I've had him for about 5 years now.

He has been a wonderful addition to my entourage. They need a lot of guidance early on, lots of exercise and they need to feel as part of the family. ( I just went outside and took this photo to show you the resemblance)

He is all 'Bully' breed Q. Nice little hound ya got. AmStaff/Pitt/BritStaff are very easy to train because they are extremely smart, BUT they are also very iron willed.
As to webbed feet, yes, that is part of the Bully breeds because they LOVE playing in the water. Let him get into the water on his own or you may scare him. Everything you would like them to do they will...when they are ready.
Do not rush him into gun or 'firecracker' training. We left this alone for Bulleit, and he has no fear when that stuff goes off or goes 'bang'.
The best trick yet is 'Low Crawl'. 'Down', treat in front in hand,'Low Crawl', and he will low crawl for at least ten to 15' to get the treat. Petco, or Pet Smart have these cool little crunchy cheesy or peanut buttery treats that make Positive Reinforcement' work really good.
Socialize with other dogs to make a friendly hound. Socialize with friends to make a good solid people dog, but one who can tell friend or foe, or dirtbag really quick. He will know by your behavior as well.
Train for 20 minutes a day but no longer. You may do up to 3 sessions a day, but ONE trick at a time.
Sit, and Outside(go pee, always with a 'good boy' wehn he's done so he knows its good to pee on grass outside)
Down
Stay, but only for a 5ct, then a 10ct, unitl he gets it for 30 seconds, then 1 minute while you are seen. Then practice it while you walk away where he can't see you.
Truck: Run outside, wait by the truck, or 'Car' door to get in and go somehwhere.
High Five, by holding up a hand, give a treat for a good high five
Beg: Sit. Stay. Now place a hand, fingers down at your belt buckle. Wave the hand outward and back intoward yourself. Both paws should come as he begs. Reward with a treat.
Kiss: Bend down and you get a small lick on your face, or a big fat juicy slobbery dog kiss when you get home.
When feeding:
Put food in the bowl. Sit. Stay. Beg. 'Go Eat!'. He will relese, and go eat.

And when filled with treat that fall out as a small guy, larger ones that make him crunch the ball to get out when he is big, this rocks:

A big 'Jolly Ball' is indestructable and he will play with it for a while like a soccer ball.

Rope toys: He will learn to untie these in increments of at first hours when small, then minutes when big

Tire toys: Destroy when medium

Hard rubber toys: Some ok, some easlily destroyed

Nylabone: Get the toughest one because he will destroy the smaller softer ones real fast when he's big, but you may have to try the easier ones when he's small so he doesn't hurt his mouth.
LOTS of toys, change them out in threes each week and your furniture will thank you.
Bully dogs are cool, super family dogs, and have been part of America's photo's for generations

So Queequeg, as a dog lover that has also had a dog break through a fence and become lost for about 3 days, make sure you put in the full effort to find the dog's original owners and not be distracted by how nice or friendly the little bugger is. Your first post at 9:28a mentions that "someone loves this dog" and at 1:25p you begin making preparations for adoption. Frankly the rapidity of that sentiment change concerned me a little thinking back to my whole ordeal and how happy I was to become reconnected with my lost dog.

I'm sure you can put yourself in the other owner's shoes whom would be extremely grateful that an individual took care of their dog until it could find its rightful home. Make sure your priorities are finding the dog's owners for the next 7 days and make a serious concerted effort to reconnect them. Only after that minimum amount of time, should you even broach the subject of becoming a replacement home.

Its the right thing to do......

We are into dog rescue's as well. I married a pet / animal fanatic and she has rubbed off on me. I'm guessing Staffhealboxbrenbull terrier...hahahaha.....SmokeRolls

You are right of course. I have been looking around for signs posted but understand it is very early for that. In addition to this little guy's lack of a collar, he is also not house broken, suggesting some neglect or complacency on the part of his owners but no abuse. I realize some people take the collars off their dogs at times (for fear of strangling?),so there may be someone out there looking for him. The husband of my wife's sister, mentioned above, is on the board of the Hillsborough county Humane Society, the source of our connection to the bull bog adoptions I mentioned above as well. He's also an attorney and can walk us through any potential penalties the rightful owners might face if the pup is "chipped". Owners of chipped dogs get some crap if their dogs are found wandering. Sometimes they lose their dogs. We just want to make sure he's as seamlessly returned or adopted as fate can be manipulated! No needle for this guy!

I have two daughters and it becomes difficult to be too detatched or clinical for very long. That said, rest assured, if the rightful owner turns up and isn't a shit bag, he'll be going home!

Additionally, I am not hiding him as he has been out playing in the yard with my Elke and we took a very public, 3 mile walk yesterday and will again today, and every day, through the neighborhood. Our's is a fairly busy street and many people would be able to see him driving by. Another reason we refused to just let him wander: tires are very unforgiving to critters!

I appreciate your concern and have nothing but sympathy for your anxious days wondering were your dog was. It's a shitty thing to do to convert the property of others, especially their pets; for all I know this pup got out when his home was burglarized, making the loss even more dear. It happens.

We're planning for all contingencies. I'll keep you apprised.

Nothing new so far. No posters, nothing in the newspaper, Tampa Bay Online. I've walked him everyday throughout the neighborhood, as well as having him out front with Elke (GSD).

Tomorrow we'll take him in to either our vet or the Humane Society to scan for a chip. In the meantime, he's got a great appetite, is progressing in the housebreaking department-no accidents since early Saturday, and getting along with the cats! Elke is fine with the little shit!

He is a pretty cool little dog. There are a lot of vacant homes in my area (no shit. Where, earth?) and it's possible he was heave ho'd when his masters bugged out. Just a theory.

The little dude led me to his house today...

Funny thing is we walked by the same house every time we walked and he pulled on the leash each time we went near it. On several occasions I let him lead but it was inconclusive; he didn't follow through, and I didn't let him off the leash for fear he'd run into the road.

Today, we altered the route a little and circled through another part of the neighborhood and as we came back by the house in question he started pulling. As this time we were next to, rather than across the street from, said house. I dropped the leash to let him go and sure as shit, he ran to the front door and started scratching at it.

The house in question is occupied by at least 10 different people and is the very same one I told one of my cop friends about as a potential doper house.

Anyway, I knocked on the door a couple times and got no answer. I then crossed the street to call Mrs. Q, leaving the pup to continue scratching the door, while I informed her of developments. The door opened while I was on the phone and the little guy saw his owner!

This development seems to fall into shitbag territory but what could I do?

It's definitely his owner. The big white one is owned by them too. Great...

The female that answered the door looked more like a Pot head given her girth, slovenly appearance and laziness regarding the lack of a collar, vaccination tag not even the slightest effort to find her precious "Man Man"; the little pups's name...Oy.

The owner of this house has put several generations of renters in there over five years or so. The crew of quiet and hardworking, Mexican construction workers long ago moved on and since then indifferent to downright hostile shitbags have taken their place.

Gotta love absentee landlords...

Id say offer them some cash and say youd like to give the pup to your daughters. I had a white lab puppy back in the day, I was in 1st grade maybe. My dad came to get me early the next day and told me someone had took him. Sure enough one of our landscapers stole him out of our house! My dad and several other guys tracked the guy down, took the dog back and this landscaper had the nerve to tell him he rescued him from the street and deserved a reward. My dad told him his reward was not getting his head kicked in and then arrested for theft. That white lab, Boomer, meant more to me then anything I had. I had to put him down just 8 months ago.

Trust me, get the dog back! your daughters and the puppy deserve it.

I appreciate the sentiment but we have an excellent, three year old German Shepherd who they love, and will have a another puppy in good time.

Who knows, the little fella may find his way back here on his own. I don't want any conflict with short sighted dopers.

Best they have their dog back and I didn't have to fend off the attack of some outraged stoner who'd have required some perforation.

NO ammount of cash will negate the little guy's loyalty. He is a dog. Dogs are the most loyal animals on four legs. Not his fault his owners are Dbags. Just think of what could have happened if the owners saw him in your yard during the day and decided to come knocking after dark or worse when you were not home.
My bet is the little guy will get beat and eventually come running, or go hungry because hash head fatty can't afford his food because she ate all the groceries and smoked up all the money

Queequeg, you've done the right thing. Unfortunately a lost dog often has a logical conclusion and it only goes one of two ways. The responsible owners where a wanderer got loose and the irresponsible owners that could care less if it got loose. The latter being much more common.

So the owners have their dog back, the dog was very well cared for while it was away, and your family is safe from ill intentions of unscrupulous neighbors.

I do think since you've earned some kudos from the owners (hopefully that is the case), it does no harm in passing to mention that if the dog does not continue to fit their lifestyle, that you would be happy to serve as a replacement home. Then the chips can fall where they may and let God make the decision to where fate ends up with the dog.

I would definitely keep an eye out though for any mistreatment of the dog. Sounds like you're in the neighborhood to check in on the little guy. If you see anything negative, animal control is only a confidential animal cruelty report away.

Definitely a bitter sweet ending.

To share a personal story of mine. A few years back, my wife and I were driving home when we came across some cars that had stopped in the middle of the road. We stopped as well and found a circle of folks surrounding a female German Shepard that had been hit. We promptly loaded the dog into the back of our car (snapping the whole way, had been hit in the rear hip area so was mobile up front) and went down to the vet. $400 dollars later the hip was set and we brought the dog home to rehabilitate it until we found its owner. The dog didn't have a tag, chip, or ID tattoo to help us.

For 4 weeks we poured over the shelters, newspapers, Craigslist postings, and even had flyers posted in the neighborhood where the dog was hit. After absolutely no leads and hundreds of hours invested in finding the rightful owner (and evidence the dog hadn't been well cared for before the accident and evidence of anti-social behavior after the accident) we concluded that it was a long time stray and needed to rejoin society.

We worked with an animal rescue foundation that we had donated time to previously, and attended a few adoption events after the dog had healed and become socialized again. After about 2 months, we placed the dog with a wonderful family with 2 little boys age 6 and 8. They bonded immediately and visited them 3 weeks later to make sure things were going well. Pie (my wife called her "Cutie Pie") was well integrated and happy as could be.

Sometimes it is worth it to give back to man's best friend.

If the Daughters get seriously hung up on this, time to look for a new pup, from a more legitimate source. Daughters and pups are made for each other, most any pup will do. In our house, it's about cats; otherwise, same, same...

It may a nudge that its time to go rescue!

Look for a no-kill shelter-many of the "humane societies" are just 501c3's that buy into a self preservation system that actually allows them to put down exorbitant numbers of animals (Az Humane here puts down more than they adopt, while marketing themselves as not putting down any healthy adoptable animals).
