Hi all,

I have been considering getting into long(er) range precision shooting for a while and finally decided to go for it... I have been shooting all my life and like quality but functional firearms (Noveske, Sig, etc). I don't plan on starting high end, but am sure that I will upgrade (read: sell and replace) if I find I enjoy it.

I plan to use an illum. Leupold Mark IV 4.5-14X50 for optics.

I want a lighter weight rifle (10-12 lbs loaded), and would prefer a 20" bbl so that I can use it to hunt with some as well.

I guess my question is what rifle should I start with--I have been looking at Remington 700 LTR ($900) and Savage 10 PC ($675). Which one would you go with and why? And which mounts, rail, bipod, etc would you use?

I plan to take a class or two, and would like to have the necessities taken care of.

Thanks,

Paul

Re: Looking at Getting into LR Precision Shooting

Savage 10 PC is a good choice. EGW makes a good 20 MOA base for savage. Savage would be a good starter rifle for you for several reasons. You said your just starting and want to keep your costs down. They are easy to work on, rebarrel, and upgrade without a smith. And most of them are shooters right out of the box without pouring money into it. Best advice I can give you is to read all the sticky threads on this forum. Getting started in LR shooting, optics, hand loading steps 1-5, and more. Tons of valuable info in there. Also sign up for the online training. The more reading you do on here will help you more than anything.

Re: Looking at Getting into LR Precision Shooting

What Brett said, you can't go wrong with a Savage 10 for a starter rifle. For what you have budgeted for your optics you can find a used Nightforce for the same money and I have seen waaaaay fewer complaints on this and other boards regarding NF quality vs what Leupold has become.

Good luck and good shooting.

Thanks for the responses...

Thunderbolt: I have looked at that STR far too many times already...Haha. I just think 11 lbs unloaded is a little heavier than what I what I wanted. Nice rifle and great price though, who knows maybe I'll just do it.

Training Wheels: I have the Mil discount on Leupold, I can't even get close to a Nightforce for what the Leupold costs me. I do have some concerns though.

If I really get into this I will buy a Premier Reticles or S&B.

Re: Looking at Getting into LR Precision Shooting

I don't think getting the Leupold is a bad idea, especially if you get a good buy on one. Then if you decide you want to upgrade to a S&B, you can always sell it. Or, look for a really good buy on a used rifle and scope, from my experience, if you buy a used firearm for the right money, you have very little risk in losing money selling it.

Re: Looking at Getting into LR Precision Shooting

Well I couldn't help myself, so I purchased the STR rifle listed in the classifieds. Wife seemed eerily okay with it (maybe it's time to buy a new boat). Ozzie seems like a good guy who really cares about what he puts into his rifles. I'll let everyone know how it shoots once I get it in my hands... Now if only I could make my mind up on what to do with my Noveske Recon???
