Re: Looking for 6mm/223 load data
Jim- I just built one on a Savage 12, and I've run the loads a little hotter than the Hodgdon online data told me I should, but here's what I have
Throated for 105 Amax (Yeah, I was being optimistic) with 27.75" finished barrel length from breach face to crown. 1:8t Shilen
75 Vmax
Wolf SRmag primers
25.5gr WC844 (H335 starting data) - 2850 fps
26.0gr WC844 - 2900 fps --> best accuracy, shot .3" @ 100y
26.2gr WC844 - 2910 fps
26.4gr WC844 - 2885 fps
Pressure started to show at 26.2 and really show at 26.4gr It shoots VERY well at 26.0 so I left it there.
100 BTSP Hornady (these bullets suck but they were free)
Wolf SRmag primer
25.5gr BLC-2 - 2550fps
25.8gr BLC-2 - 2580fps
26.0gr BLC-2 - 2620fps
26.3gr BLC-2 - 2670fps --> best accuracy, shoots .75
26.5gr BLC-2 - 2685fps --> second best accuracy, shot .85-.9
26.8gr BLC-2 - 2700fps pressure starting to show
27.0gr BLC-2 - 2695fps LOTS of pressure
My goal was something that had great barrel life and could be a ballistic twin to the results I'm getting from my 30-06 with 178 Amax. I've since worked some new 06 loads and this won't be possible, but it's still a very good, no recoil shooter that my girlfriend can shoot all day and it won't cost me a fortune in barrels or components.
I've only stretched it to 400y with the 75's and it's still an easy minute of groundhog.
I would suggest throating it for something in the 75-87gr Vmax range, I thought with the longer barrel and strong action I could probably run them hotter than expected, but the 100's are not getting into the 2850 range like I was hoping with BLC-2.
The action is a bone stock Savage 12 FV, I bought a PTG reamer and throating reamer from Dave Kiff. If you need a reamer let me know I'll send it to you to borrow.
