I've looked at several threads over the years here about different topics and I've finally decided to finally join.

Anyway I have started to become interested in longer range shooting but really need to work on the fundamentals first. I thought the best way to work on this would be a .22 and then move up to a centerfire. Currently I have a Vostok CM-2 that I'm drilling and tapping for a scope rail. Should I just stick with it or should I consider something else? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

That CM-2 is about as good as it gets, you should absolutely keep it. They are serious competition-level guns. Mine will shoot 3/8" groups at 50 yards if I feed it the right ammo (RWS Target Rifle works best for this one), and that's with the aperture sights.

You have the right idea starting with a 22. You can shoot the heck out of it because ammo is cheap, you won't develop a flinch, and if you take it past 100 yards it will force you to learn how to read the wind.
