Commifornia no longer
I currently (after paying a few bills) have some money to buy another scope. I was woindering what your guys thoughts were on the 5.5-22x56 nxs or a 8-32? For right now it is going to be on a 300wsm savage, but i want a scope that will have enough power and be good enough that i wont feel a need to trade it off. i curently have a 6.5-20x50 mk4 on it and want something with a little more clarity and be able to gather more light. Or will a jump to the nightforce give me more clarity than a mk4? If not what will, hopefully within the same range of the nightforces and not more than 2000?

I was leaning towards the 8-32 nightforce to forgo buying a spotting scope too, so i have less stuff to lug around. It will mainly be used for shooting from prone.

I had looked into IORs but have heard a lot of good and a lot of bad, and never having the chance to look through one i am not sure what to think.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Re: looking for a new scope....

If your looking for more clarity, i'd say the NXS probably doesn't have it, they are great scopes, but probably nor any more clear than your mk4, look into Ziess for clear sharp images, IMO the SIII's are hard to beat too,

Re: looking for a new scope....

There's more travel in the 5.5-22,so it's a trade off between magnification or travel.Glass is good as is Sightron.Next step up in quality is much more $,USO,S$B,Premier.Hard to beat a NF overall.Save some $ and get a used one.

I disagree wholeheartedly... Although not a huge NF fan, my NF has amazing glass IMO, much nicer than my MK4's...

I'd say USO, but I'm biased...

By the way, I wouldn't get wrapped around the axle with big time magnification. I did for a while, and have moved past it. I shot my rifles @ 600y yesterday with my scopes turned down to 10x.

BTW, I'm speaking toward your thoughts on the 8-32x...

I think you got a hold of the wrong Mark 4s, or a special NF.

My thoughts as well, though I admittedly don't have anywhere near the level of experience as many here. On two separate occasions at two different shops I recently compared the 5.5-22x50mm NXS to the 6.5-20x50mm MK4. I fully expected to like the NXS more and I was prepared to order a NF that day. I know I may be in the minority, but to my eye I really felt like there was very little difference in visible optical quality. If anything, the MK4 looked a little better to me and I liked the TMR reticle the most. I realize the NF has more elevation/windage and is more robust, but I’m very happy with my new Mark 4. If I was to step up from my MK4, I’d look at Premier, USO, Zeiss Diavari, or S&B.

Re: looking for a new scope....

I don't know why folks put so much into the "glass" of a scope.

I'll take OK glass, a durable overall package, rock solid adjustments, and repeatability over a scope with GREAT glass that has a spotty record on durability or a history of crappy customer service.

NF continues to get my money for scopes, and I don't see that changing in the near future. When the FFP 5.5-22 comes out .... I'll likely trade up from the SFP.

Re: looking for a new scope....

by me in EU are a lot of used S&B for sale, let me know what you want and Ill see
NXS only pos. but I only speak about 1-4x/2,5-10x with 24mm objective, but these glasses beats all others I have used ( Kahles,S&B,Zeiss,Swarovski,Meopta )
I have sale my S&B short dot after I looked in the NXS 1-4x24,cristal clear,I was so suprised how much light comes in the small 24mm objective, even from dask till down ( I am not a Tarantino fan LOL )
stay in touch

Re: looking for a new scope....

I know a lot of us sound like broken records but I will once again suggest a USO. Nightforces IMHO are just overpriced Leupolds. They do have better glass but I don't see any other marked improvements over a Leupold. My USO SN-3 will stay with me for many, many years.

Re: looking for a new scope....

As an Opinion we all have one mine are based on years of using and some reading, My first USO had the best glass I can remember.

3 scopes from the same manufacture USO had problems I just cant take a chance with those odds, My S@B was a lemon from the factory and I may never know the true quality they offer as I will problobly not own another one for the price they cost is out of my reach for now and PR is looking better anyway.

the other 2 USO's where a let down after expecting what I thought was the norm in glass clarity from the first one.

owned more NF NXS than I remember and each always track and held zero and ran the exact same dope no matter the adjustments MOA or MILL...NF does not cut deals or do some of the buddy stuff and rub elbows,But there quality repeatability and durability are on target every time thats counts in my book .

I haven't had any NF NXS issues and that's a huge difference compared to my other experience with other scopes from other companies. Glass could be better,But I say that about all the scopes Ive owned..

All the USO's I had did track and maintain zero for the record..

Re: looking for a new scope....

Do any used USO or NF NXS ever come up for sale? If so where is a good place to look for one. Sorry to hijack the thread, new guy here and didn't know if this was worthy to start a new thread.

+1, there have been numerous for sales posts for used USOs lately. I believe some are still for sale. Just picked mine up today at USO; I would give up lunch every day if I was using it to visit USO...

Well how much magnification would you guys recomend? Why i had been thinking of more magnifiction was to help spot and to range.
Are the IORs worth looking at? I know that if a person has the cash that USO are the way to go though.
