Looking for advise for a 260 Long Action Build

This rifle will be for hunting Mule deer, white tail and maybe Elk but mostly Mulies and white tail. I am thinking of having a (REM 260) built on a long action platform, I would like to know the pros and cons of building it on a long action platform. I have found a Enfield 30 06 for about $260.00. What would be a good inexpensive donor rifle? I know I want to go with atleast a 26" barrel and I am looking for more info on 5R barrels. What would be a good contour barrel? I will be selling my Savage 12 LRP 260 to buy my childrens Christmas presents and pay some bills so I wiant to collect as much info as possible. I'm set on the (REM 260) but I need as much advise as possible. I already have the dies and have started reloading for the 260. I want to learn to shoot long range targets but I probably won't be shooting game out past 600 yards. There is a local smith that I am going to have put everything together. As far as the stock goes, I'm looking at the B & C M40 or the HS Precision M24. Thanks in advance for everyones input.

Im interested in this same subject also. I have a really nice Weatherby long action thats been in my faimly for a while that Id like to build a .260 on. I dont know much about building short action calibers on long action rifles, but from what ive read it will let you obviously load the bullet out longer and utilize more of the available case capacity.

The barrel contour really is just your personal choice. Do you want a lighter #3-#4 contour for easy packing, but faster heat up, or a Rem Varmint contour thats a lil heavier, but wont get hot as fast for longer strings of fire.

Also, send me a PM if you dont mind and let me know what youd like to sell the LRP 260 for. I have a friend that is wanting a good rifle to get into shooting, but he is also on a pretty tight budget. He's looked at the 12LRP, but he cant afford a new one.

?????? whats wrong with the rifle you have? it seems like you could just keep the rifle and use the donor money for kids. Or is it a long action .260 you have your heart set on?

My plan was to sell this rifle in order to buy the kids christmas and if I had any left over then I would look at purchasing a donor rifle or just pay bills. I love this caliber so I am just trying to learn what I can do to maximize it's capabilities. I really do not want to sell the LRP but I feel like it's the right thing to do at this time. I'm not in any hurry because I just had surgery done on my shoulder, the Doctor repaired my bicep and my rotator cuff so it's going to be a bit before I can do any shooting. I really want to have a custom rifle built to my specs. Any advise on where to start would be much appreciated.

Give me the specs on the LRP. I may be interested in that. I am looking for a savage to build a semi custom .260 with. And the LRP is what I wanted.

I have come across a Custom Mauser in a 264 rem mag for $450.00, are these good rifles and actions? I have also come across a custom 30 06 enfield for $260.00. I will eventually convert which ever rifle I get into a long action 260. Is there any benefit to building the 260 on a long action platform? I can't afford an expensive custom action so this looks like the route I will be going. If I bought the Mauser 264 win mag, I would probably go with something in the 7mm or just keep it as is other changing the stock and a few other things.

I actually just need the money from the sale of the LRP for christmas and bills. I just figured that I would start from scratch next year when funds are not so tight. The only reason that I am looking at using the long action for this is to be able to seat my bullets out further. The LRP is a great rifle but I want to have one built a little lighter. If I don't sell the LRP I'll just look at other options to lighten it up a bit.
