anyone know a good place to send a gun off to get it engraved? What I need is for someone to engrave a gun for a retirement gift and need his years of service and names of the guys that are getting it for him. Also, may want to add an insignia.

Re: looking for engraver

A friend of mine has a laser engraver. She's retired Pa State Police and I've had her do two Kimbers and a Springfield for me. They came out nice and she was licensed by Kimber to use their emblem. She does custom presentation boxes too.

Re: looking for engraver

try yahoo and a little legwork. some are for products but some are actual engravers.

no way of knowing if any one is better that another, but it will give you a way to start. we have a decent local guy that uses a machine engraver but does it by hand. no one local does it old school by hand anymore. hope you find someone and if you do post who you use for reference

Re: looking for engraver

depending on the rifle you can sometimes get away with ingraving the type of text you want on the floorplate. Then you don't need to ship the whole gun. I have 3 machine engravers and when a gun comes in for this type of cosmetic or insignia work, I think it looks better on a "removable/replacable" portion of the gun. like the floorplate. I usually use my diamond tip scratch engraver with a cursive font, looks really nice. If for some reason the guy ever needs to part with the firearm, the new owner just replaces the inexpensive part rather than have some joes name scratched into the barrel.
