Looking for ideas and input. I'm looking to probably build a 16-20" short barreled varmint rifle that 75% of the time will be used for spot light hunting out of a truck.

Action used will be a 308 bolt faced Defiance Deviant
Stock used I was thinking a MSC-TA with mini chassis ??

Barrel probably a MTU with deep fluting. I don't have a suppressor yet but may thread just in case I add one later.
Jewel trigger will be used

What caliber would you guy suggest ?? 22-250,243 etc I want it fast and flat. I would prefer 40-70gr since I want it fast.

Any caliber suggestion with this bolt face that would be better ?? I'm good with most any choice as long as brass prep isn't out of my league.

Barrel contour could be changed I don't care if it's alittle on heavy side but bring 16-20 with deep flutes should keep weight done especially if going 16-18".

I want it short so I can get it out of my truck window quick without trouble.

Ideas welcomed .

A 16.5" 260 or 6.5 Creedmoor can push 140s north of 2550fps; 18.5" should be at least 2625, probably faster.

Plenty of power for medium game, and better 1000yd ballistics than a 26" 308.

EDIT: missed the "fast & flat" part...but 95gr Vmax should do well from a shorty 6.5.

Also forgot to mention I have deviant but could go with stiller action in 223 bolt face if needed.

Most game is rabbit, skunk, coyotes, hogs once in awhile appear etc . So smaller game hog being largest.

Yes I realize my 17hmr can take care of most these critters but never fails if I take just it I see coyotes out of range or a hog etc and would rather carry one gun to do it all.
