Looking for options to mount NV on a Remington 700

Re: Looking for options to mount NV on a Remington 700

PRI makes a long cantilever rail but you will need to have your receiver drilled and re-tapped for 8-40 threads. I would check into the eye relief before mounting NV to the rear of an optic as well as IR settings on the optic. Even the lowest lit reticle setting can be too much for NV. I would advise checking out TNVC and the options they offer. Vic is very knowledgeable and won't steer you wrong.

I dont think the MARS, McCann or any ohter cantilevered rail will do what he is asking. Any rail extension that has a step down in it will cause problems for forward mounting a scope. Why anyone would want to do that is out of my paygrade, but that was his question.

Is this a dedicated NV rifle (guessing with PVS14) ? The whole world is looking for ways to mount NV devices in FRONT of the day scope, which avoids many, many issues.........

Re: Looking for options to mount NV on a Remington 700

Behind works for red dot sights, not so much for scopes. If you have to remove your scope and scoot it forward 2-3 inches, you have zero issues to contend with.

Re: Looking for options to mount NV on a Remington 700

I ordered a EGW 3" extended mount just for the reason you stated. This way with the PVS14 mounted the eye relief is close. My US optics is mounted in ARMS QD rings but you must rezero after each change. It is a small pain in the A$$ but works really good and until I have enough money to justify the purchase of a PVS22 it will have to work.

HA shaggy, read his post, he wants to put the nightvision BEHIND the day scope.

But your Linky-Fu is strong, and well directed ;-)

I think thats a piss poor idea. I stand by my links.

Re: Looking for options to mount NV on a Remington

The system works. I have it and use it. I believe what he is stating above is the difference in forward mount versus ocular mount. Another thing to add is Power wise and glass wise as you add more there is usually a lose in light so you may want to look at adding a IR light source. Obviously with the gen 3 any light at all and you are generally fine. The only time I really noticed needing the IR source was zero ambient and running it on my spotting scope. But out in the desert it is like looking at a green day time. not sure if you needed any of that it just popped in my head

Re: Looking for options to mount NV on a Remington

Funny you ask, yes, I have had em mounted both for and aft of the scope. Its a personal opinion, but, yes, I prefer it mounted in front of the scope with something QD.

This way, youre not lugging around more weight during the day when you dont need your NV. Also, not carrying around shit that might get damaged when you dont need it, so it can stay in its nice padded Pelican. (Since my rifle and optics bounce around the trunk of a squadcar all day, this is a concern for me.) And, when you take off your NV, you dont have to move your fucking scope and worry about changing your POI.

SO what your saying is that you have tried this set up and it does not work? Or you stating a theory?

Oh I know what, I'll take your advice, slap my knee and call Vic and call him an ass for selling me this set up.

Now to the guys who were mature and kind enough to contribute to a question I had, thanks.

That Post Purchase Pride is a bitch isn't it?

If you are talking about using it with a NV compatible red dot sight, go for it, it will work. But since your first post mentioned a R700, I did not think that you would be going that route.

I have not tried the exact set up you linked from TNVC. I have successfully used similar set ups on M4 platforms with Aimpoint products. I would not consider anything like that TNVC product for use with a magnifying day optic as you have hinted.

I have 8 1/2 years of operational experience with NV on precision rifles (sorry no hog hunting). Our original issue stuff went BEHIND the day scope and it SUCKED ASS. It sucked so bad, that our legal office forced the vendor to refund us for six units after we fought with them for two years. They were replaced with PVS 22 systems on McCann rails and work just fine.

From the link you posted:
“One thing to keep in mind when placing the unit on a day scope is eye relief. You will have to move the scope forward to accommodate the extra length added by the PVS-14.”

They are alluding to the zero issues that you will have. That kind of statement is what I call a CLUE.
If your day scope has to be moved forward on the rail to allow use of the NVD, you will now have a new zero (or no zero) to contend with.

If being right makes one less mature we are in a world of hurt.

"If Triad is for me, who can be against me?" Shaggy 8:31

People should ask for this kind of advice BEFORE making purchases...many of us can tell you why its a stupid idea.

Ive gotten in the habit of looking at the first post, and skipping the rest, since most ideas floating around are bad ones (his aft NV is a perfect example). As a result, I missed the intended purpose was killing pigs. So, since he's not operational, STOMP is out of the question unless he can find a used one someone is selling. Mark wont sell em without knowing youre LE or having letterhead.

So, his option is:

unless he likes wasting money on MARS rails.

....i can truly see that shaggy was so ever thoughtful and clairvoyant in his assessment of you.......you sir don't have a clue and need to quit trying to impress those here with you wannabe hunting prowess .

all to often mis-guided children trot out here and attempt to blow smoke up the rectum of the many that have come before you....

there are many here that are much more savvy to the ways of the world.

You guys are too gung ho for me. I bet I have you guys down to the T. You guys are the overly loud side line quarter backs that stand behind fans at a football game saying BS like I knew he was going to pass and I knew he should have rushed the QB. And also the type that stands around in a gun store all day listening in all the customers conversations and trying to chime in with no this is better.

look here here GI Joe's........</div></div>

Hmmmm, after reading that I come to one conclusion. You sir, are an assclown. Many of us on this site have indeed been there and done that for the military or as an LEO and yes we can be a gung ho bunch. We LIKE the way we are, we DO NOT armchair quarterback because what we offer Mr. Assclown is damned good advice. You would do well to take it, and drive on. If Shaggy thinks your set up is BS, he is probably correct. You would do well to keep your mouth shut, and listen to the advice of the men here who are willing to dispence it in your misguided direction.
Learn from this Grasshopper. Always do your research before you buy something. Always come here and ASK the questions you NEED the answers to because you know what? There is a HUGE chance that someone here knows the right fucking answer.
