I was lucky enough to win a raffle this weekend for a custom rifle built in any short action caliber, the rifle will be made by Montana Rifle Company.

I'm thinking about their Sniper Scout in either 308 or 300WSM, but it's basically open to anything they make as long as it's a short action.

I've never been in a clean slate "what would you like" situation before.

    Looking for recommendations.

    Thanks

I'd like to get 1000 yard shots out of something other then my 50 BMG. So I'd be trying to reach far as I could with it.

    I don't have a 308, but I was thinking 338 Edge. But they don't offer it.

Short action cartridge and reaching 1000 yard (+/-). punching paper vs. hunting (since you mentioned 338 edge. of course that wouldn't fit the requirement).

    1. 308- load it right with the right bullet, 1K is not a problem. plentiful surplus ammo (before the war that is).
    2. 243 with long throat chambering for the 115 grains. is one badass caliber.
    3. 6.5x47 Lapua. the 6.5 mm family.
    4. If you must enter the WSM family, I would recommend the 7 mm WSM. It can reach 1K and then some.

Good luck. BTW, congrats on your lucky win. Let us know your decision.

I went with the 300WSM. It's going to take around 45 days to build, I will post some results of how it shoots as soon as I can.

Thanks for all the great info.
