looking into a rem 700 build

Hey guys, I have a few questions . I'm looking into building a long range tactical rifle, mostly based off the USMC m40a1 or m40a3. I recently bought a remington 700 SPS tactical in .308 that I mounted a nightforce 3.5-15x50 scope on it, it shoots like a dream. Whats the best way to go about building an m40a3 rifle. Do I buy the cheapest new rem 700 rifle for the receiver or can I just buy the receiver brand new from remington? Could you guys guide me in the right direction? Thanks

you can just buy the reciever if you can find one, or if you find a really cheap 700 rifle you can use it as a donor, as far as pointing you in the right direction, I don't know how much you are wanting to spend but definitely look int GA precision, they build one helluva mil-spec m40

Steve, thanks for the input. I just checked out GA precision, they have some awesome looking rifles, but I think Id rather build my own from scratch.

ok, do you have a lathe? or do you want to use a pre-threaded, short chambered barrel, and just finish ream by hand?

Don't get me wrong here... I do LOVE the Marine M40's. But what about the Army's M24? It is a Remington 700 long action .308 and the long action allows you to swap the barrel for a 300.

slayer, I meant buy the parts and put the rifle together...lol. sorry, I shouldve explained more. wjwill:I wouldnt mind building both over time...lol. Lets just start with the m40 short action in .308.

Buy all of the parts and pieces you want to go into it and send it to a good smith. Or you could just tell them what you want and have them get everything. It would be faster if you got the parts yourself, but most good smiths will help you get whatever you want.

Yoou could always buy a Pierce action, already trued from the get go.

Nope for the m40a1 or a3 you just need a rem 700 sa reciever. But if you are going for a true clone build of an M40A1 you need to find the correct serial number range if that matters to you.

You might check local Wal-Mart's as well. Its been a while (6 months or so) but they had the ADL marked below $400. It was a SA but I can't remember the cal. I wish I would have bought it just for a donor.

I am in the same boat, but not going to clone the m40. Just looking for a good shooter. I think i am going to get a 700 sps tactical and put it in B&C stock for now.

I also saw the FN PBR on CDNN for pretty cheap, but can't find stocks for it.

Let me know what you find in the way of an action or an action/barrel combo for the 700 you are looking at building.

You also have to swap out the bolt to go to 300WM.

Don't overlook the SPS Varmint in 308. You have an extra 6" of barrel to mess with. I ended up cutting mine to 22" as a compromise between a range rifle and a semi-practical one for Tactical Bambi Interdiction missions. I may start shooting some Tactical matches in the future, I just need the free time from work.
