Maryland, USA!
I have a 4-14x44 FFP moa/moa scope. Now here are the questions.

1. I'm very new to long range. I know this is a good scope for new guys. But I do too believe in buy once cry once... to an extent. Price point is around 600-1000 cash plus the cash from my falcon menace once insell that. So all in all no more than 1400 Max. Guessing around 400 for the falcon ( but thats most likely not accurate as I don't know the resale value) so 600-1000 plus the menace value.
2. The scope came with the rifle I bought. But should I upgrade the scope? I've been looking around at NF, USO, IOR, SWFA etc. What would you recommend, and why? I'm shooting a 308 and being I'm new to this shooting... I would be shooting at lower yardages. Max for now maybe 5-600 is optimistic. But I would like to reach out to
1000 soon enough. And no matches. Just rec. shooting.

3. I have an FFP now, and I do like the idea about it and how it works. Is there any reason to stay with FFP or not?

4. Should I go moa/moa or mil/mil. Being that I'm new and going to be learning all about shooting, how to use and that.. would it be better to learn on one style over the other?

5. I would rather buy used, as it's a better value usually. So what would you recommend me to keep an eye out for? What do you recommend.

Sure I'm going to get hit with the search and all stuff, but its hard looking around for this over that style questuons/answers. None tthe less I'm all ears. Thanks.

Re: Looking to replace my falcon menace, and questions.

I was in your shoes. Personally I kept mine till I was able to look through a bunch of different glass and figured out which one was right for me. I used it all the way out to 1k. Its not the clearest optic out there but it worked great for me. My next scope was a used Night Force 3.5-15. Got it for a hell of a deal. I would wait a while till you find either a great deal or you have had the chance to look through some other scopes.

Re: Looking to replace my falcon menace, and questions.

True, so I'm guessing you to I have a menace? The other thing is I don't have many places, really none at all, to look thru glass at. But being this is such a popular forum and filled well mostly filled, with honest good fellas here. So with that bbeing said I wouldn't feel uneasy taking someone's opinion here.

Re: Looking to replace my falcon menace, and questions.

Holy shit yeah. Was the going price for falcon menaces with butler creeks sunshade and rings? So whatever I could get for that subtracted from a user scioe around 1000-1400 so say 400 for the scope ( unsure on market value) so 600-1000

Re: Looking to replace my falcon menace, and questions.

If you are looking at right around 1k I would look at the Vortex PST. If you are looking for something around $1400. Check out the new Bushnell HDMR 3.5-21. Great scope for the price as well. Those are my two choices. If you can find a used Night Force for around that price then that is also a great option. You will be happy with either one of those scopes.

Re: Looking to replace my falcon menace, and questions.

Okay. Should I keep ffp and moa/moa or no ffp or no moa/mia and go mil/mil. Etc. What about illumination, x50 or smaller etc?I'm looking to continue to read and see more opinions.

With a budget of 1400 your options are pretty wide open to finding a great scope here on the Hide. There's two examples of what can be had for decent deals around here. My next NF will be a used one from this site. I bought one new and the next will be used, no reason to pay store front price when someone else can. Most of the stuff for sale is like new anyhow, nobody used their stuff here. It's like Prada or Coach..... Haha

That is up to you. Nothing wrong with MOA/MOA. Just make sure the Reticle and the Turrets are matching. As far as SFP and FFP again that is totally up to you.

Re: Looking to replace my falcon menace, and questions.

yeah I havent found much on FFP versus SFP and the differences in one versus the other. Sure I have found stuff, but its VERY lengthy and not in laymans terms. Well hell I couldnt understand it much

And as far as MOA and MIL, I'll have to do more looking around.

Thanks fellas.

I think Im going to look into the Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP or the SWFA SS 5-12x50 FFP. But once again still looking. If I find a NF cheap, even better

Re: Looking to replace my falcon menace, and questions.

bump.

What do you guys think of these as replacements? Vortex PST 6-24x50 FFP or the SWFA SS 5-12x50 FFP. I like the zero stop features, and I think its only NF and Vortex that have it...right?

Id like to have a Nightforce if I can find one used.

Also, like I said.. Id be shooting around 300 yards off of the bat and then I would love to eventually get out to 1000 yards. What is the max magnification I should have? I think someone said that menace could work at 1000yards with the 4-14.

Yes, you can buy them here on the Hide used in the $1200 range. Same with the HDMR.

Another consideration is the Bushnell HDMR 3.5-21. I have 3 of them, great scopes.

To answer your question yes you loose some field of view at highest mag. There are a lot of times it's more beneficial to use max mag and not worry about field of view. Like paper stages at 100Y, shooting groups or repeated precision shots at a fixed distance like F-class match's, etc.

One can always use less mag as the situation dictates.
