So ive been going back and forth between Fulton Armorys 20" 1:12 twist barrel and JP enterprises 20" 1:10 twist barrel JP also makes a 22" 1:11 twist ive been eyeing. i put in an order for the JP barrel but since the bolts r 6 weeks backordered, i can always cancel.

anywho, are these two companies pretty much on the same level as far as quality/accuracy? For what the JP barrel costs, i can get a FA barrel AND bcg/bolt. but the JP barrel does come with a bolt and id just have to get the carrier. my goal with this barrel/setup is accurate at 500 yards (with my part and hand loads)but also dabble in 1000 yards. is the 1:12 capable of this or would the 1:10/1:11 be better?

1/10 and 12 are made for different bullet weights, (optimized) both will shoot different weights but one is better than the other. </div></div>

since i wil be rolling my own, i can use any really. i heard the 175 SMK are great, but i heard 165's r nice as well. as it sits right now, i have 300 rounds a 168 A-max from a previous .308 i had that i have since sold. got into the .223 game, liked it..but miss the .308. but after those 300 rnds r gone, ill shoot whatever bullet.

As it sits now im leaning towards the rifle i called on now.. the 22" JP thats 1:11 twist. but if JP and FA are pretty much "even" as far as quality, then ill take the $200 more im spending on the JP barrel/bolt, and get the FA barrel in 1:12 and a complete bolt/carrier then shoot around a 1:12 twist barrel. but if JP is a better barrel, the i'll shoot around a 1:11 twist.

i saw that thread before posting and it was on a good track, then got derailed and i couldnt figure out what anyone was trying to say. The chart that was posted on that thread i agree'd with whoever it was.. that it was so out of spec in the .223 twist rate that i didnt beleive the .308 info it gave.

i'd LIKE to 1 day throw a can on this rifle but its so in the future im not going to give it much thought. im just trying to figure out if 1 is THAT much better then the other or what barrel twist rate is better so the bullet doesnt just drop to the ground after 800 yards.

**bump**

after looking more online, I haven't really seen if one is better then the other. is the 1:12 twist capable of 800-1000 yards ?

Why not go with the 1:10" twist? Do you have concerns about the faster twist or does it come down to wanting to save the $$$ by going with the Fulton Armory?

If you're sticking to the 175gr SMK as the longest bullet you'll shoot, you should be fine with the a 1:12" twist.

However, there really is no discernible downside to going with the the faster 1:10" twist and you'll be able to shoot any .308 projectile that you want without worry (should you ever decide to play around with the 190-208 gr heavyweights). If I were you, I'd keep the JP order and be happy with my choice.

Re: losing sleep over these 2 barrels... plz help

its not as much as saving money as wondering which if 1 company is that much better then the other, or not. if they are both pretty much the same, ill keep my jp order. i dont think ill be shooting much above 175gr. im sure ill be experimenting with 165-175 stuff.

Re: losing sleep over these 2 barrels... plz help

if you're looking at using a 175 I'd go with the 1:12 (best twist for 175 is 1:11.25) for best accuracy with the 1:12 though I'd use 168 grn. I'd go with the 1:10 if you're looking at using heavier loads in the 190 range.

Re: losing sleep over these 2 barrels... plz help

the bolt is part, and how the barrel is cryofreezed vs heated up. that and every time I decided on the Fa barrel, I kept looking at the jp. so I figure that was a hint that I wanted the jp one more.

yeah..that's me. but I got a house semi recently and when I was going to order a barrel I ended up doing some tile. but taxes are enroute so I can finally finish off the project.
