Today i lost a man that had more to do with my childhood and who i am as a person than my own dad ever did.

He survived his house being destroyed by the luftwaffe in WW2, and the german navy had a good go at killing him twice, torpedoing and sinking two of the ships he was posted on throughout the same conflict.

A great man by all accounts, nobody ever had a bad word to say about him, he had a rapier sharp sense of humour and was one of the kindest individuals i've ever had the pleasure of knowing and called a friend.

Rest easy C.Pike 1927-2010

Please accept my heartfelt sympathy on the passing of your friend. Hold tight to the memories and let them give you strength. Those memories are not that he died, but that he lived and shared his life and experience with you.

Re: Lost another member of the older generation today

Thanks Guys!
Cybnew, i was lucky enough, that during the summer holidays as a kid i'd go around their house for the day and help out with yard work and the like. We'd end up watching old war movies or westerns and we'd talk about his life. The man was a fantastic story teller, even the darkest and more sombre stories would have some sort of funny moment. Especially the one about his house being blown up with him, his 3 brothers and his mum in it at the time!

There's now one brother left out of the 4. All served in ww2, one died fighting in 1944.

God rest all of them, and all those who fought for their countries when they were, truly, fighting for their freedom

Re: Lost another member of the older generation today

Thanks for the thoughts and wishes guys and girls, the funeral was on tuesday 30th. I never pictured myself laughing at a funeral, but did! He had a wicked sense of humour. It was a celebration of his life rather than hard-core depressive mourning, most of the eulogies brought the room into laughter.
