I have an older friend that is getting sensitive to high recoil rifles. He has a 7mmRM and I suggested loading some low recoil rounds instead of buying a new rifle. I also have an aunt that wants to start deer hunting and cant handle the recoil of hard kicking rifles, she has a 30/06 in a remington 7400, I dont know if low recoil rounds will cycle it though.

Any suggestions?

Re: Low recoil loads

Yes, the low recoil rounds are a great option. Hodgdon has some good data on their site. Just reduce the bullet weight and velocity. You'll have to try the reduced loads to see if it will cycle the 7400, unless someone else can chime in that has done the same with this rifle.

Re: Low recoil loads

I haven't done this for a 7400, but with a BAR I've seen very slow powder and light bullets still cycle the action.

The other thing that can be done is to run the 7400 as a manually cycled bolt. I've done that a lot with gas guns and super light loads for subsonic ammo.

Re: Low recoil loads

They may not cycle at the lower charges but you have alot of leeway with Hodgdon's "60% Rule" & H-4895 powder. I've done it myself with the 300WSM & 30-06 using 150 grain bullets. I didn't go right to the lower limits. That all depends on your intended use.
