LR118 for my FNAR load data trim lenght,O.A.L., powder ,primer, Bullet SMK175 .Crimp or no crimp? Can you get SMK175 with a cannure? Will a taper crimp be enough? If a Ball powder is used should I use a Magnum primer?Would it hurt to just use magnum primers (I have a ton) I will be loading Lake City brass. Any input would be great.
Thanks Scot

Re: LR118 clone

Several years ago, someone here on SH took one apart, had the powder analized, then posted what the .308-m118lr load was. Don't know if it is still the same today.

LC brass
175Gn Sierra MatchKing
42.8 Gn. Reloader-15
Std. LR primer (He thought they were CCI)
OAL 2.800
Did not know what type of crimping they used.
They did seal primers and bullets

<span style="font-size: 11pt"><span style="text-decoration: underline"><span style="font-weight: bold">I consider this a max. if not a hot load considering the smaller volume of LC brass</span></span></span>

<span style="font-size: 11pt"><span style="text-decoration: underline"><span style="font-weight: bold">If you are going to try to duplicate this load drop down to a reloading manual starting point for 175 Gn. SMK's with reloader-15 and slowly work your way up watching for pressure signs.</span></span></span>

crimping groove not available on SMK'S
Mag. primers not necessary or advisable for .308

M118 or M118LR?

There *is* a difference, including on-target.

Re: LR118 clone

I'd be curious to know if it was regular off the shelf R15, or a canister grade not available to most. I'd guess a canister grade, but who knows...

Re: LR118 clone

I'm not sure why the fascination with duplicating the load as far as powder and primer.

I simply took a box out, Chrono'd them at 2680 to 2710 fps and du plicated that with a 175SMK

That is where I got my 45.0 gr Varget, Fed 210M, 175SMK load from - using Winchester b rass though.

Far easier to duplicate the speed. I like RL powders second to Varget...but Varget was a known for me at that time.

I did reload a batch with LC brass - I have not chrono'd them but it was about 42 or 42.5 gr of Varget..

Re: LR118 clone

It's a low flash derivative of RL15.

The interest I had in it was because it was an issued ammo for the matches I was shooting. (Navy Marksmanship Team - www.usnst.org )

I think other shooters think if it's the military load it's the best load.

M118-LR Clone

LC LR Brass
Federal 210M Primer
44.3gr RL15 Powder
Sierra 175gr SMK
NO Crimp on Primer or Neck (Mil ammo uses and asphalt based sealer for the necks.)
There is no Cannure on M118-LR
(M118 uses a 173gr projectile without an open tip.)

This is my primary load in an FN A5-M with a 24" chrome lined barrel.
It is capable of being extreemly accurate depending on your loading technique. (Redding "S" dies with a .338 bushing work well for me.)
Unless you are using this load in combat, I would stay away from sealing it.
The sealer will create small inconsistencies in the release of the bullet from the case.

As always, use safe loading practices and work up to this load.

That WAS the original M118LR, prior to Iraq.

This IS the the load that cause the M14 breakages.

THIS LOAD IS FOR STRONG BOLT ACTION RIFLES ONLY.
