Lt. Varmint Contour vs. Hvy Varmint Contour Barrel

Could someone please explain to me the pros and cons of both a lt. varmint contour barrel and a hvy. contour varmint barrel in a Remington 700 Tactical rifle?

I am going to rebarrel my Remington 700 SPS Varmint, and didn't know which contour I should go with for a .308 Winchester barrel.

Also, I will be rebarreling with a 20" barrel as opposed to the 26" barrel that came with the rifle.

FYI ... I'm seriously looking into the Broughton 5C barrels.

light varmint is plenty of barrel, especially if you finish it at 20"
you should consider sticking with RV contour so you dont have to fool with your barrel channel inlet

I'm replacing the stock, as well, with an HS-Precision stock. I will tell them what the finished barrel dimensions are when I get it installed, and they will make sure the channel is correct.

I don't know what Broughton contours are, but in Krieger the "varmint" designation means they have a 5" straight section so you can set them back once.

The Remmy contour is kind of a default medium heavy contour. Nothing wrong with it. It does have a short straight section though, so setbacks of more than 2-3 threads are out of the question.

Cool thing is the remmy contour is a common inlet (look at the available McM stocks from the vendors) plus lots show up used in the FS section here with this stock inlet. Some get all hung up on the contour and the barrel channel matching; I do not. As long as it fits, it is good.

I desire to have that 5" straight section, however, it comes with a 50% increase in weight. For my already heavy rifle, it becomes too much.

I have a Krieger HV on my rig. It is finished at 29 inches, its a pig. It shoots like a house of fire though. I don't do much runnin and gunnin so the weight doesn't bother me at all.

I put a heavy Krieger on one of my rifles. It shoots great but I almost need a golf cart to lug it around. I would go with a Krieger again in a heartbeat but shorter and smaller contour.

I would go lv or less on a 20" barrel,tim makes a great barrel i have an 8 twist 6mm 5c and its incredibly accurate.

I have a Brux LV on my 7mmRM that finishes at 26". Still plenty of mass on that barrel...

I have a Krieger lv on my 308 finished at 24" which is #18 on there contour page and I also put it in a HS Precision stock. I think modal number pst012. With my barrel finished at 24" I was not happy with it due to it being so front heavy. With you finishing at 20" it may not be that front heavy but I would look at another stock if you think this will bother you. I just ordered a mannes t-4 that was heavy filled in the rear to offset the barrel weight. Good luck.

Take a look at the light and medium Palma contours. They seem to strike a good balance. Although Palmas are normally 31"+, a custom barrel shop will make you a blank with whatever contour dimensions you specify.
