Just an update, I had a new box installed today, my GS had it in stock. 2.95" is no problem, the VLD type bullets may even reach the lands from the mag. I feel like I have a brand new toy!
I'm not sure what brand it is, but it must be slightly over 3". He milled out the rear of the receiver, shortened the bolt stop and changed the follower. I don't have any VLDs to try, so they may not reach, but the Amax @2.95" gives me room to play, and the heavies will have more powder too.
That has to be the fastest conversion job I've ever seen. In less than 24 hours:
You got your information
You got your rifle to your smith.
He had an extended mag box & follower in stock, brand unknown.
And the same day: He milled out your receiver; and shortened your bolt stop.
And you got it back to try it.....
Wow, most gunsmith's are too busy to return calls in less 24 hours. Glad it worked out for you.....
Thanks Bob, it was quick. My GS is actually a good freind and we were supposed to go fishing on his property yesterday, but I brought my rifle just in case.
I had talked to him Sun, and through the course of conversation he gave me the idea and mentioned that he thought he had the part in stock. He told me to load a dummy round to get the OAL which I did that night. I was thinking it would be too long to work which is the main reason I posted about it, just to check if someone had done it already. He was in the shop finishing up a rifle for a guy when I got there and I showed him the dummy round and it fit in the box, so he told me to go grab my rifle! It really didn't take him long, but I know his other projects got jumped, I didn't complain though!
The kicker is he only wanted to charge me for the parts, but I made him take a little extra.
I've been running the new numbers through QL and it will definitely open some new windows, especially with the heavies.
