I shot my bone stock LTR in .223 this past weekend. It shoots pretty good, but the trigger is horrible! I'm thinking of having a trigger job done on the rifle. Is this a good choice, or should I buy an aftermarket trigger?
If I should get the trigger worked, is there someone here that you'r recommend?
If you recommend the aftermarket trigger, which one do you suggest?

Thanks for the help. This rig will be used to shoot coyotes, if that makes a difference in your decision

Re: LTR trigger sux!

It depends. Do you have the old style Remington trigger or the new X mark pro? The new ones are pieces of junk. The old style can be adjusted very nicely but it will void your warranty. Here's a link on how to adjust the old style yourself. It's not at all difficult to do. I did it myself on my LTR and it works slick as shit now.

Re: LTR trigger sux!

Remove the screws in the floor plate. Remove the action from the stock. If your trigger has 3 screws it's the old style. If it only has 1 it's an x-mark pro and you should proceed to remove it and throw it in the trash.

All you need to do is look at it from the outside. The old style triggers have a serrated shoe. The new xmark is smooth MIM BS.

Re: LTR trigger sux!

Not sure how old your LTR is, but all of the new ones (post August '09) now come with 40X triggers. I bought my LTR in November. It has the 40X trigger and is the best from the factory pull I've had. I would guess it around 3 pounds with just the slightest creep, which is consistent. I still intend to get it fine tuned a little but it's really pretty good.

If you do have a 40X in it, I wouldn't bother with an aftermarket, just get yours tuned up.

ETA - Here's a pic of the 40X trigger in my LTR from another thread... in case you want to compare and see what you have:

Re: LTR trigger sux!

What didn't you like about it? Was it too much travel, gritty, too heavy etc?

There are lots of good aftermarket trigger options, but a trigger job on the factory trigger (esp. if it's an Xmark) will only fix so much.

Re: LTR trigger sux!

I just had the older Remington trigger installed and set to 2.5 lbs. Works excellent and is much cheaper than a real trigger upgrade

It's been in the safe for a few years (at least 4 or 5), and I just got the chance to put some glass on it and start shooting it recently

Too long and WAY too heavy!

That should be the old style 700 trigger. Follow the instructions in the link above or take it to a good gunsmith and have him do it. The factory adjustment was set to have ultra safe sear engagement and avoid any possibilty of someone making a claim that he "accidently" injured themselves or someone else because of a light trigger.

Thanks for the info. Now I just need to find a good smith to do the work.

Anyone from the Hide that I should send it to? I'd rather support someone here than try to find someone local who may or may not do a good job.
