Been a member here for a while and have been reading and reading. Great site. My question is that I purchased a Factory Rem 700 sps varmint with 26" barreled action. I also went ahead and purchased a B&C Medalist, however, the previous owner had this stock bedded and he had a hollands lug, .250 and tapered.
I was thinking about just selling this stock and buying another one that would fit factory lug but was also debating would there be a gain by having the lug replaced and keeping the stock?

What would you guys suggest?

Re: Lug and Stock Question???

Have a gunsmith rough up the lug recess in the stock and rebed your action in the stock. Shouldn't cost much. You need to bed your gun in the stock anyway.

Re: Lug and Stock Question???

or...........

Take a look at some of the excellent bedding turorials on this site. If you want to get the feel of rolling your own, a bedding job is a great place to start.

Take your time, use lots of release agent, put masking tape on the stock to prevent bedding compound overrun, put on some more release agent, etc.

It is a lot of fun and you will probably be happy with the results.

Re: Lug and Stock Question???

I actually thought about doing it myself but really wanted to shoot the rifle with the stock that way I could see how it grouped then bedding it and seeing the improvement.

Which release agent do you suggest?

Re: Lug and Stock Question???

You can order release agent from a number of sources, midway, brownells, or use several layers of normal paste wax on the steel, use modeling clay from the hobby store in any openings, bedding epoxy will go everywhere. If you glue that action into the stock and have to bandsaw it off, don't blame me! Yep, done that!

Re: Lug and Stock Question???

Release agent is easy. I have used Johnson's paste wax, products just for guns, and Kiwi neutral shoe polish.

For the past several years, I have used the Kiwi exclusively for the action and bottom metal and dip the screws ALL THE WAY TO THE HEADS in Johnson's. This gives me some peace of mind that I will not have a stuck action and have to drill out the screw heads because some bedding seeped into the screw holes.

Again, there are excellent bedding articles on this site. Review them several times and if you have questions, ask.

Re: Lug and Stock Question???

I have read several articles up here and seen lots of pics on the do it yourself bedding jobs. Overall I have been excited on the projects that will come, it sounds like I will be bedding once this darn Hurricane goes by!...
