I ordered at Lothar Walther barrel in 308 / 25" / 1:12

Got the barrel installed but after measuring I find that the gunsmith who installed the barrel have cut it down to 23"

Will this affect the performance of the rifle out to around 1 mile? I know I'll lose around 40-50fps according to Quickload, which doesn't sound like a lot and i could even make up for the lost velocity when handloading.

But with a 1:12 groove i wonder if the barrel is long enough to stabilize a 175gr bullet?

In 308, yes that will no doubt effect its ability to a mile because that cartridge was not designed to shoot that far out. Kind of like yoga pants on some women, just because they make them in your size doesn't mean they look good.

Really you will probably only lose 20-25 fps per inch with a good aftermarket barrel like LW. It will still stabilize the 175's/178's though.

If you are really looking at shooting that far with a 308, check out the solid lathe turned projectiles from Dan Warner. Super high BC that will turn your 308 into a 338
