Gunsmithing M&P 10 Barrel Nut Not Screwing All The Way Down, Normal?

Greetings and Salutations, new member and this is my first post. I am hoping to capture some knowledge of the group.

I own an M&P 10 that I purchased used which had a hideous round handguard installed on it. I did some shopping around and found an Aim Sports Handguard extremely reasonable with a steel barrel nut on Sportsman’s Guide in the $75 range. With my current budget I didn’t want to spend $225+ on one and with excellent reviews this for the time being would fit the bill.

When it arrived I hand threaded the barrel nut in place without the barrel and after a half turn had to use the armorers wrench to get it the rest of the way down. I removed it and looked closely and there were no metal shavings of any kind so it was threaded properly and it did screw all the way down flush with the upper receiver. I did this twice and the only thing I noticed on the inside of the barrel nut was the discoloration where the paint had been removed. The third time I used some MilSpec armorers grease on the outside of the barrel and on the upper receiver threads and still had difficulty in screwing it down. I got it as far down as I felt comfortable in taking it then backed the nut off again and repeated. The 5th time I did it for “keeps” and can only get the barrel nut down to where there are 3 threads showing on the upper receiver. I fear if I push it any further with the amount of force I am using I may strip the threads and be “screwed, blued and tattooed” so I stopped.

I have contacted Aim Sports and asked them if “this is normal”, they had me check with Smith for the threads and pitch. I confirmed that the M&P does in fact use the same as the DMPS which is a 1 7/16” - 16 pitch thread (the Armalite/Noveske uses an 18 pitch thread). The first 6 replies to Aim Sports were very quick, now that I have confirmed I did everything right and with the right part..I am waiting on them to see what they are going to do. I simply asked “The Barrel seems tight with no play, even with the 1/8” gap in the rails am I SAFE in shooting this or do I need another barrel nut to make it flush?” So I ask the large crainium members here... if it is tight with no barrel movement, am I ok to shoot this .308 battle rifle or will I need plastic surgery if I do? I am going to attach a pic of the situation, the handguard has been loosened and moved forward to show the barrel nut.

Thanks a million in advance for your time, energy and effort on my behalf.

What does it look like when you push the handguard back to where the crossbolt engages the the channel in the barrel nut. The handguard should almost touch the receiver. The barrel nut bottoms out on barrel extension not he upper but most are closer than that.

Is the barrel nut making contact with the flange of the barrel extension? If so, and you're able to properly torque and time everything, then it's good.
