I have recently purchased a M1 carbine from a friend because he needed money and i have been having feeding problems with it. What seems to be is the magazines fit loose. Its almost like the magazine well allows the magazines to rock forward and down far enough for the bullets to hit the bottom of the feed ramp and jam. Now if you push up on the magazine while firing it works 100% but if you let go it will drop forward and down causing a jam. I have probably 20 magazines and its the case with all of them. What do i need to do?

Re: M1 Carbine Problem....

I'd check two things, first is the mag catch. The military updated the mag catch to work better with the 30rd mags, supposedly it was a better set up. unfortunately I don't recall what the designation for the updated catch was. Second check the back of the mags, there are two "dimples" that the mag catch grabs if they are worn can allow the mag to drop out of the gun enough to cause problems. Hope it helps.

I have thought about replacing the mag catch because it is a little worn but it actually looks like the whole dam mag well is too big. The magazine actually has room to rock forward and down. If you can imagine that the back of the magazine stays in place by the mag catch and dimples on the magazine while the front of the magazine has enough room between it and the front of the mag well that it can rock forward causing the bullets to be nose down instead of level.
