M14 National Match..?

Re: M14 National Match..?

I'd say yes it can be done depending on how far out you want to go. And also how much money you would like to spend to do it.

Maybe Gunfighter14e2 will chime in on this one he know a lot about that platform and real world use of.

Re: M14 National Match..?

How much do you think I would have to spend?
It's already set-up with Troy MCS and a Magpul PRS. Just ordered a SWFA SS 10x42 last night.
I was mainly curious to see what else I might need or if I just need to go get a bolt action.. I mean I know a bolt will be more accurate in the long run but I like M14..

Re: M14 National Match..?

It will do just fine, I've taken 2 different M14 out to 1000 yards with no problems, one of them has a SS 10xx42. I took the JamieD long range shooting class with an M21 and it kept right up with all the bolt guns shooting steel. It also grouped under .75" MOA at 100 yards. Don't shoot anything over 175 gr. I just use 175gr FGGM. If you have got that rifle alreay you have got the major expense done. Get a good Sadlak steel mount, some TPS rings, and a SS. I would also get some GI bolt guts.

This is the 100 yard 6 shot group from the test at Jamie's long range shooting school.

Re: M14 National Match..?

I go by 10 round groups. And so far in 10 rounds it or me opens up my groups. 3 rounds they are on top of one another. Pretty accurate. It's your call.
As set up you should see 1moa to 3/4moa in 10 rounds. Maybe a Krieger barrel, or a change in gas pistons could help it shrink slightly. Pretty hard getting it 1/2moa. You need to be good yourself, everything just right, ammo great, and a bit of luck. It isn't cheap, but your a long way into it now with what you have.

Re: M14 National Match..?

My M1a is set up as a hunting/go to rifle. It's lighter than my bolt guns and a lot more versatile. It wears a 2.5-10 Nightforce as opposed to the 6-24 or bigger on the bolts. Not ideal for shooting at paper, but perfect for walking around in the woods. I also take the scope off and shoot NRA high power matches. That rifle will teach you more about basic marksmanship than any bolt gun.

Re: M14 National Match..?

I own two M1A variants; a Fulton Peerless in a heavy NM walnut stock with NM iron sights and also a scoped LRB M25.

While my AR-10 is ergonomically superior, easier to drive through the cycling & recoil, is more accurate than either of them and was also cheaper to build I really enjoy shooting the M1A's. I'm not sure if it's the nostalgic feel of them or the looks but I can't bring myself to part with either of them even though the AR-10 is a better rifle in most aspects. Slinging up and banging steel with the Fulton and iron sights is very enjoyable. Building the M25 was over a 2 year exercise between waiting for the LRB receiver and scrounging up all mint TRW parts so I'm emotionally invested in that rifle.

If you want consistent small groups from a semi-auto you will be money ahead and have less frustration getting there with an AR-10. Also, if you want to really reach out with an M1A there is a risk of bending an oprod if you load too hot. I'm not saying an M1A can't do the job-- but getting there with an AR-10 will be easier and save some money.

Since you already have the rifle, MCS, and PRS with a scope & mount on the way I'd go out and try it; if the results make you happy then stick with it!

Re: M14 National Match..?

I used to have a tricked out AR10, and I agree with everything you said.......but, this levels the playing field and allows you to use your longrange rifle for CQB. Check us out on the web www.jtactical.com or on facebook.

From the color of his user name, it looks like he's a paying sponsor now. As annoying as it may be to some people, if he want's to blow his own horn all the time...
