Check out the Crazy Horse M21A5 from SEI and the TACOM M14EBR-RI.

There are also the CRANE built MK14 Mod 0, Mod 1 and the MK14 SEI Mod 0.

Yes

Re: M14 still issued?

Absolutely, they are in the top 10 combat rifles of all time. By what you said, it doesnt sound like they stopped being used because they have tons of reports of malfuntions, but its because no one was properly trained when something didnt go correctly.

Re: M14 still issued?

Yes they both issue them. The USMC has a serious dmr built on them. The Army ones are a mixed bag of just scoped to full on ebr based builds.

Re: M14 still issued?

SEI has been tapped to build 500 16" M14s for a particular
ARMY unit. These rifles will be the first 16" USGI M14s ever.

SEI has tested their new 16" barrels and report consistent accuracy of
about 1 MOA. This is as good as their short lived chrome lined 18" barrel.

Re: M14 still issued?

It has been done. I guess you check it into the armory and then it gets issued to you. The problem is getting your weapon back.

Re: M14 still issued?

I know of a few guys who brought there own and just kept there mouths shut about having them. But remember that you can be charged for war crimes if you bring expanding ammo. That said .45 fmj's still kick ass pretty well.

Re: M14 still issued?

The Army Infantry units assign them to an individual in each squad and there after he is referred to as the "Squad Designated Marksman". Their job being engaging threats at a distant when sniper support is not available while still maintaining the fire power of a rifleman within the squad. Depending on the budget of the unit, most have been outfitted with the SOPMOD set up. Currently, 5th group is testing AR platform rifles in heavier calibers for issue.

Re: M14 still issued?

As for taking personal side arm it is a very delicate situation. Prior to deployment to Sadr City (a very rough area in Bagdad), battalion HQ reassigned our snipers side arms to the machine gunners. Their reasoning was that sniper teams are supposed to receive a fire team for security escort and no longer need them. Reality was that more often than not the security element was not available. A very good friend of mine (I was a scout in the Scout/Sniper platoon) brought a Beretta M9 with him and carried it. Can't say I blame him. A 5 shot bolt gun is worthless when gaining entry into a building. Ultimately, his immediate command turned a blind eye but eventually higher ups found out. All that saved his career was his Ranger tab...So basically, be VERY, VERY careful!

Use yes, but it's not a primary weapon.

Did he horsetrade for it over there or bring it from back home? Because I hear stories about guys swapping weapons around between each other (especially pistols) but afaik bringing one from home is a no-no.

Re: M14 still issued?

He brought it from the states. Trading gear is fairly common among platoon members. The only downsize is after passing around weapons and all their mags and pouches for a year the original owner becomes obscure. Then when it comes in time to turn in your gear you have 3 SAW pouches instead of 8 M4. And trust me, supply gives two shits. You will be charged for it. lol.

Re: M14 still issued?

The arms room issues weapon(s) and or weapon systems to individuals by serial number. There are numerous reasons for this and once down range/on mission if you pass your M4 to PVT X and take his M249 ... that is on the leadership but the bottom line is maintain accountability for all sensitive items. Now that looks great on paper but when your out in the battle space and on mission you do what you need to do at the time. As the saying goes ... Do what your rank can handle.

Re: M14 still issued?

I was meaning more along the lines of the pouches and such. Not sensitive items which are accounted for multiple time a day.
