Default M193 80

I just picked up some 1X fired brass at the range from some guys shooting next to me stamped M193 and the other side 80 which I presume is the year. They were shooting AR-15's. I believe it is 5.56mm but it does not say .5.56 or .223 on the case head. I have never loaded anything with this head stamp. Is it Nato spec? It's probably common knowledge but I have been shooting 30 cal. for many years. If one of you knowledgeable guy's would clue me in I would be thankfull. Thanks in advance.

M-193, like M-855, is a US Military designator for the cartridge using 55gr speced FMJ/BT at 3240 fps. The M-855 is the cartridge 'part/model number' for the 62gr SS-109 penetrator round.

This could be somebody getting brass made and just having it stamped M-193. Nato speced ammo has the NATO + on the head, usually with the factory code and date.

If it's boxer primed, load it up, or sell it.

Re: M193 80

There's been a lot of XM 193 being sold commercially, though I don't think it's date coded 80. I have some cases in the garage.

I'll see if I can check them out in the morning.

Perhaps we could see I pic of the case?

Re: M193 80

Thanks guy's. I was told on another forum that the 80 is probably 08 instead. It is if I don't rotate the case and read it. These guy's prob just bought the ammo at the gun store as new or fairly new ammo.
