Does the M2008 short action use the same exterior bolt size for both standard s/a calibers (308WIN) and short magnums, the only difference being the size of the bolt face? I am wondering if you can do a switch barrel for a M2008 from a 308 to a 7mmWSM if you buy a different bolt for the rifle. Are the short action and short magnum actions entirely different, or do they simply have different size bolt faces?

Re: M2008 bolt questions

I don't know that replacement bolts are available. I was wanting to do my 30-06 in an M2008 so I would need to go the other direction (long action with .308 bolt face).

Maybe once Marty gets enough back stock of these he'll make some other bolts (different faces) for the actions.

Re: M2008 bolt questions

i reed somewhere here that he only built this when he's got some spare time and once they are all gone; there gone for some time...
i reed that it took 9 months or so for the second generation to come out.
you migh want to post here a question for the guys, whos got one of those; on the kind you want, to check them and post there specs.

my .002 for today

Re: M2008 bolt questions

Yeah, I'm thinking an email to Marty is in order... unless someone out there knows the answer. I'd assume it would have to be special order because they probably make 1 bolt for 1 action and don't get this request often. Still, that would be a mean setup.

Re: M2008 bolt questions

Moof, easiest way is to look at your bolt stop/release.

Gen 1 - a one peice lever.

Gen 2 - A lever and a sliding bolt stop/release.

Ide be willing to bet money B.O. has a specified serial number cut off between the 2 generations

This is a Gen 2 (notice the 2 peice bolt stop/release)

Re: M2008 bolt questions

1st Gen has a 2 piece bolt stop, it's just a different design. shorter and centered in the release lever. Retained by a fork cut into the release lever that engages a mushroom head on the bolt stop. The 2nd Gen has a pocket cut in the side of the stop and the release lever has leg that sticks out and engages that pocket.

2nd gen is longer and engages the bolt at a different angle. Because of this the bolt is not compatible between different generations. There is more that makes them not compatible, but I won't go into that.
