M40's had same barrel contour as the Remington Varmint Specials of that era or now. Roughly 1.125 ahead of lug and .830 muzzle diameter and 24" in length.

The link was actually in reference to the M40A1 barrel contour which is significantly heavier than the M40 barrels.
Also just FYI the M40 WAS NOT built on Remington 40X receivers but was built on 700 receivers with serial numberes between 168179 to 322769. They were built in the custom shop.
